what's the diff between solid state and other amps?

Solid state amps don't have tubes. Most amps currently sold for home use (either in receivers, integrated amps, or separate amps)are solid state. There are various solid state amp designs, and there are various tube amp designs.

The main difference between solid state amps and tube amps are that solid state amps are much more reliable, much less expensive per watt, and generate less heat--and heat is the enemy of all electronics. Also tube amps require occassional re-biasing and the replacement of tubes--which can be expensive.

Just as computers gave up using tubes in the 50's with the advent of releable transistors and solid state components, it is also wise for the average consumer to do likewise.
