Passive Subwoofer

I bought a Denon AVR-1610 and my friend gave me his old (5 years or so) Pioneer 5.1 speaker system. Come to find out the subwoofer is passive (I'm assuming it is because it doesn't have a plug and it won't work when I hook it to the receiver), so I either need an amp or a new sub. What do you think is my best option? I found links to preamps at parts express and the cheapest I can find is $30 and it looks like I would actually need to build it into the enclosure. I'm having a hard time finding just a sub by itself without all the other speakers with it. I'd like to spend as little as possible

Where are you shopping for a powered sub?
I cannot swing a dead cat for hitting cheap sub ads.

For 30$, just do without.

You need a BASH amp, not a preamp.

Wow, bash amp makes it much more expensive. The cheapest powered subs I can find are around $100. I think I'll just wait until I can afford one of those, because it seems there is no cheap alternative.

Thanks though!
