My University setup!
Wasted a lot of money a student 'doesn't have' buying and selling speakers, amps and so on.
Finally I have a happy medium.

Tell us what you have there JJ.

Back when I was in University we had a gov't loan program called OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program). We actually called it the "Ontario Stereo Acquisition Program", for obvious reasons.

I wish it was possible for me to use the OSAP that easily! You need a damn good reason to use student finance support here in Lancaster, UK.

The speakers are Acoustic Energy's Aegis Neo 1s in walnut and the amplifier is a A&R Cambridge A60 (built in the UK). I went with this amp because my Dad had an Arcam/Mission system and I loved the sound of the Arcam stuff. Got the speakers because I loved some floorstanding AE speakers I had. Recieved the amp this morning. The source is a brand new ESI Julia soundcard which replaced a 5 year old Emu 0404 which died on me. I replaced some monitor audio br2s and a marantz pm6002 with this setup and its far superior in every respect.

They sure are Art. I believe the same as yours, Nexus 7s in graphite metallic?

It does sound very nice, smooth, punchy, detailed, accurate and all round musical.

I have those shorts still, used them today!!
I'm a lucky boy (man now) to have such nice parents seeing me through University.

The tweeters are designed like that, they're like a bullet, AE's dual ring radiator design...

"The all-new tweeter is a dual ring-radiator design, it was selected for its exceptional off axis frequency response , wide bandwidth and low distortion.
The patented dual ring-radiator design negates high frequency resonance issues found in rigid diaphragm tweeters, and boasts a flat on-axis response
up to 45kHz..The extremely wide bandwidth covered by this tweeter results in a far smoother crossover transition and high frequency roll-off than any
tweeters used in previous Aegis series, bringing a smoother, sweeter "high end" sound previously unavailable at this price point."

I wont give in with University, difficult it may be but I'm no failure!

You still have the RCA 5 stereo Nick? You know just for old times sake? I'm keeping my first soundcard, as it was my first decent source.

Do you mass fill your Nexus Art and why/why not? I used to have the Nexus 6 but for my room they're too short with the desk getting in the way.

I love the simple style and sleekness of the amp! A&R Cambridge was where Arcam started in 1976 (Amplification and Recording Cambridge). Chris Evans who's a well known radio presenter/dj here in the UK helped design it along with Cambridge University Graduates.

Its the best amplifier I've owned to date, even at 33 years old. I was even lucky enough to find it with the original (and very detailed) manual in good condition.

I do presently have the stands filled with sand. You can only fill the center tube. I found that with that stand the speakers that I used before and after filling them sounded better after. Bass was better controlled and imaging was better.

The Atacama's are in the office and my Studio Tech SP24's are being used for the HT rears. I wanted to try my Diamond 9.1's in the main system (for more than a few minutes) without removing stands from the other systems.

For now I'm playing with it a little bit here with my paradigm's and rega tt. Eventually it will end up in my sons room. I have a pair of Polks for him but I'm hoping to find a pair of vintage speaks to pair up with it and the spare cd player I have.

The Onk/CV system is in the oldest boy's room. This system goes to the #2 son. This one, by the way, is a Pioneer SX 780 rated at 45w. Meters never seem to go past 6 or 7w though.

One more system for my daughter and we should be set.

Yes, I've got 3 music lovers (5, 7 and 9 years old) here with a broad range of musical interests.

I remember my first "stereo" system when I was a kid. Santa brought it when I was around 8...It wasn't much but it meant the world to me. I started to buy vinyl shortly after that with my allowance and then lied about my age to get a paper route for music funds.

A Rotel and Atom setup is a nice start!

Shhhh.

You're supposed to wait for the check to clear.

Suprisingly these amps can go too loud. I mistakenly turned the gain switch to 5 of 5 instead of 4 of 5 with the potentiometer set at full and had to turn it down. When I have "listening freedom" I run the switch at 3 with the CD player and at 4 with the TT.

I wonder what they could do if I moved the Gain selector one each amp past the 12 O'Clock position?

Something I can experiment with later, but it sounds great where it's at right now.

I ran the 7300 at full gain on both sides using the pre-amp to modify volume settings.

It seems like a lot of switches in the circuit, but these are all straight-wire-with-a-gain type devices, so the selectivity looks to be wunnerful!

Well done, Mike, the pics do the amps little justce, I am sure!
The one looks to be original...

Any time Nuck, let me know and I will take off a few days.

I thought one amp at 40 wpc did not do amplified music (think rock) but was outstanding on non-amplified music. Both amps bridged at 80 wpc have no trouble with amplified music and do even better (sound stage for instance) with non-amplified music. I just played Robert Johnson and am putting Lady Gaga on the CD player next.

Most serious watts indeed. I have been turning down the volume knob on the pre-amp all afternoon. It's about 1/2 of where I started the day. That's what happens when you are not having any alcohol to drink when you are listening as most of you would not know.

After talking to JV I now understand I was probably throwing some distortion earlier. It's handling Lady Gaga with no trouble, the only distortion is from the CD itself as it's present whether I have the volume at 0.3 watts or 30 watts (no meters, just sonic memory from what the 7300 levels read at these sound levels).

Yes, two brand new sets of Input and Output tubes are in play. Winged "C"s for the outputs.

The original tubes are boxed away, probably should be safe deposit boxed away. LOL

Nope, just the amp, tubes shipped seperately. And after what UPS did to the amp, crushed box top and bottom, it's a damn good thing the tubes were shipped separately. It came with everything orginal, crud and rust included, no manuals or anything else. Fortunately because they did nothing to the amp ever it was completely original with all the lettering intact. The fellow I took it took to replaced some caps, tested everything out, then restored it to as new as you could imagine.

I had purchased replacement tubes before I even got the amp so he installed those and boxed up the original tubes in boxes from the replacement tubes.

Okay, time to post some pics of my new Quad 12La speakers. They are gorgeous in person but can be a little tough to photograph as they are entirely black. But I got some good pics nevertheless. I can already tell these will be a b!tch to keep clean and unscratched. No one is allowed to touch them, ever! Luckily Quad includes some special gloves for whenever moving them is necessary.

I'll post my impressions later on, after I've had a chance to listen to them for a while.

One day I will have to look at adding stands. And an upgraded preamp. I'll need a tuner too. Still need a pair of interconnects, which I'll have to get now to connect the Quads. How far up the audioquest line? Might explore power cords and conditioners soon. A source that is CD only like Naim CD5i or Rega Apollo may also be on the horizon. Or maybe get a DAC. Oh yeah, let's not forget the turntable! Once all that's done, like in ten years, I'll probably start thinking of what is the weakest link and how should I replace it.

Mike, you have been busy indeed!
Nice vinyl disply, there is just so many ways to display the library, you have done good, with a collection that desreves, and begs to be chosen from.

Question.

With the bass driver firing out and all, do you get no mocrophonics from the RH Mac?
The 6550 tubes are pretty much solid and unaffected?
Those Gallo radiate pretty effectively.

The bass driver is firing outward away from the 6L6GC tubes. No sense of microphonics from either 240. Some minor microphonics from the Rogue pre-amp.

Thanks guys!

Marc had requested the pics earlier,

Stu's suggestion was taken,

JV had suggested rolling back the the DIY speaker cables, that improved things as the DIYs work better with the tube amps than my MIT Shotgun 2s do. However the MIT's on the 2nd coil from the sub-amp is four-fold better than the Goertz MI-3s I had there. wow. thanks JV, mos of your suggestions pay big dividends.

I wanted to get the amps closer to the speakers (limited by the length of the left amp power cord to the dedicated circuits outlets).

The album shelves are from IKEA. They serve a dual purpose of room diffusion.

I mentioned distortion earlier. Turns out one of my new Mullard 12AX7 tubes was defective, I had it as the phase splitter. These tube amps are can do loud just fine and are outrageously musical now that that bad actor is out of there.

Nuck,

"Oh, and the warning shot? Go real high, you remember what happened to Edie Brackell's bass player when I was visiting 2 yrs ago...

Unpacked my new Marantz DV7001. Okay, it's a Universal DVD player, but it's still some new kit. This thing is a monster. Nice build quality, I like the textured finish on top. Anyways, I'll probably do a head to head comparison with the Arcam in the following months. The Arcam will likely be my two channel player, with the Marantz eventually ending up doing HT duties. I have a bunch of SACD and DVD-A discs, hence the desire for universal players. One day I'll probably pick up a standalone CD player like the Apollo. Anyways, here's the pics:

Living Room. Coffee table is placed where it should, although its in a terrible spot for music. Room is small, and I did what I could with it. I am working on letting my wife let me have one of the spare bedrooms for a dedicated two channel room. She likes the stuff in this room though, because...it looks nice..lol..You all know how it is. The good thing about the MA speakers though, is that their sweet spot is huge. So I got some leeway on where I sit. I usually bring in a chair in that I have for critical listening. Oh, and the color of the room is different now.

Basement. I know, the Projector is sitting on top of the one AVR. However, I am only using that top NAD as a Pre amp. The bottom one is for the power. So the NAD does not heat up at all. I have monitored it well. Also, the best spot for sound for the Sub was beside the Rack. With concrete floors and a decent Stand, there is no vibration in the stand at all. I have tested this well too to make sure.

David- I just cant do it with the grills on man.lol. If I go away for a long period of time I put them on just for protection. But they sound so much better with them off that I just gave up fully on the grills. When I have kids though, that might change.lol

Art-Thanks a lot bud. I have been working hard on painting and stuff. Its starting to pay off.

George - You got that right. Drop ceiling, plus right where I would want/should mount it is a big air intake thinger ma bobers(sorry not up on my household lingo) But it works perfect there. Is easy to access. Plus with most of the Sony Projo's, to clean/change the filter and bulbs you have to take the mount off to do it. Brutal design there. But the picture quality is outstanding. Smokes anything I have ever owned in any of my Sony LCD models which I have owned 4 now. Smokes it, and at a 106inch scale. My Projector is probably my favorite toy right now...well the freshly built Bryston amp is fun too. :-)

I agree, the MA's do sound better with the grills off.

Have you noticed a big difference with the Bryston since you got it rebuilt?

Pretty big difference for sure David. It sounded great before, but sounds fantastic now. The two biggest things I noticed was the sound stage and top end. The Sound Stage, is now much wider, and the amp seems to fill the room with more sound. The top end is much smoother, less aggressive, yet still has that amazing detail and attack it always had. The attack is still there like before, you know the Bryston attack I am talking about. So fast, with spot on timing. I am loving it.

Nice. I know that Bryston attack. I miss that part of my old system. I really should get around to getting a tune up for my old 3B. I plan on hanging onto that amp.
