Speaker Setup

Derek B.
Hi guys. This is my first system. I was wondering if this setup is anygood.....

First start off with some Sony Floorstanding speakers( http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1051826208460&skuId=5378833&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03044 )

Then add some rear sound ( http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1051806316624&skuId=5378799&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03043 )

And then to power it ( http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1051806315456&skuId=5367836&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03031 )

and Finally a little something to play the CD's on ( http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1051826215121&skuId=5453617&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03034 ).

Do I need the CD changer, or can I use my Shelf system cd player and the recivcer? I can live with the price of all of that combined...
Thanks for all your time
Derek

Sounds like you have your mind already set on the Sony speakers and you need that to be reinforced. If you really like this set up, I think you should go for it. Personally I think that Sony speakers are okay but the cabinet material is cheap and I believe it is only 1/4" thick. If it is within your budget and if you like the sound, get it for your own listening pleasure and satisfaction, after you are the one who is going to listen to them all the time. However, for $249, a pair of FRx-5 Mirages, these would sound a little more like music to your ears, if you haven't heard them. The specs on the Sony's are very impressive, and also, I think you are impressed by the 3 way design, but that does not make them better in quality or better sounding.

Sony's are fine if that is what you like, so go get 'em.
cheers

Sony and Pioneer are very good at making floor standing speakers with large drivers for very little money, but that's about it. They don't have a great sound. I would avoid them.

This entire system is around $550. If we stick with Best Buy, try this system: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1051826207202&skuId=5353832&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03010 for $500.

A Panasonic, Magnavox, Toshiba, Philips or Samsung $50 to $100 Progressive scan DVD player with 3:2 pulldown can be had a Best Buy. These http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1051826208513&skuId=5378851&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03049 Sony speakers for $200 and this http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1051806315456&skuId=5367836&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03031 receiver for $180.

If you are willing to do some digging, get the same DVD player listed above and an inexpensive Sherwood receiver for under $100. See http://www.sherwoodusa.com/home_audio/hprecmain_fs.htm. I have also been able to find complete returned Energy Take 5+1 and Athena Point 5 systems for $200 to $250.

Hope that helps.
