Can a home audio system subwoofer be used on a computer sound system?

So I picked up a Yamaha YST-SW030 from a friend of mine who never used it in the home theater system he bought, and I was wondering if it could somehow be used on my computer sound system. I have a small Altec Lansing setup right now, with two small speakers and a medium subwoofer. I'm afraid I don't know too much about how speaker/sub systems work, so advice or directions would be greatly appreciated!

Is the Altec subwoofer powered? How is it connected to the computer? If it's RCA cables you may be able to jut swap out the Altec sub for the Yamaha.

The Altec Subwoofer needs a power source separate from the computer (plugged directly into the wall). The sub is connected to a control speaker, which connects to the PC via a green cable (Sorry, I don't know the name) that goes to my sound card. I don't think it can be replaced by the Yamaha, the speakers won't work unless the sub is connected. Would there be a way to connect the Yamaha separately?
