Soon I'll be receiving my marantz 4140 integrated quadraphonic power amp. I was wondering if I need to get a preamp to. I am planning to listen mainly to cd's and some vinyl. The amp already has bass middle and treble adjustments. I would like to put together a nice "old style" set up. The 4140 is rated at 70 watts in two channel and 25 in4. If I do get a preamp how many watts does it need to have?
Thank you very much

None.

Your power amp has all the watts.

Claudio, the fact it is an "integrated" amp means the preamp and power amplifier are combined in the same unit. A preamp will not add power since the output to the power amp section will be similar to the unit's internal preamp. In fact, in order to even use a preamp, the unit must have "main amp in" connections that allow the internal preamp to be bypassed. I was not a 4-channel amplifier owner when they were being made, and I don't know what the back of this looks like, but you don't need a preamp. Spend your money on some of those rare quadrophonic LPs.
