I've come across an nice deal on a 5.1 Yamaha HTR 5730, ($90) and I'm wondering how the 'stereo' setting works on surround receivers. I'm wondering if the 500W that the receiver has (and usually splits up 5 x 100W in surround) will become a 2 x 250W when I switch it to stereo.

(if that helps)

Thanks a lot!

OK, well how exactly does it work? Does it just send all info to the fronts and keep the power the same?

You will get 1/5 of maximum power to the 2front speakers.
For that unit, it would equate to about 35 watts.

Some higher end AVR's that have true wattage ratings per speaker when all speakers are being powered usually up say 100 watts to 120 watts per channel when only powering two channels. But for the most part they don't. Nuck is right, that Yamaha will only push a true 30-40 watts.

A very anemic 35-40 watts at that. Like Nuck said, save yer pennies.
