I work at a hospital and in our procedure room we have a volume control and on/off switch on the wall for the stereo speakers in the ceiling. We connected a stereo receiver to the wires that feed those speakers. If we turn the volume on the receiver up past about #3 the speakers in the room cut in and out. We have destroyed two receivers so far. Anyone have any idea how we should set this system up? Maybe a preamp? I am a complete novice with this so please be kind. Thanks

it seems that you bypassed the volume control and went directly to the speakers?
In doing so, you have likely bypassed the autoformer of the volume control.
If this is not the case, then replace the v/c with an autoformer based v/c.

I do not know of one that is hospital grade.
