I owned Fisher 10" 3-ways a LONG time ago, guessing at '75 or '76.
I was glad when I blew the midrange and bridged it out of the circuit with a 10 ohm power resistor.
They actually sounded better.
Find yourself a vintage pair of the original Advent Loudspeaker.

These speakers make sound.

That's it.

If you like them, use them.

When they blow up buy something new.

Start saving now.

How dare you recommend that this nice gentleman buy a fancy new pair of speakers, when it entirely practical, not to mention environmentally friendly, to simply repair his classic pair of 70's audio history if & when (hevean forbid), after 30+ years, they bite the dust.

You fanboys make me sick!

Now if you will, I need to go attend to my smoking Emerson 8-Track player.

Check with the guys at Audio Karma. Two thirds of them have that same eight track player and are in the process of refurbishing the unit.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I'll be back in four years to criticize you for it.

You see that genuine pressboard! They just don't make them like that anymore.

"yea older stereos, kicked any new stereos azz."

Any? That's a pretty broad statement.

http://harmankardon.com/product_detail.aspx?Region=USA&Country=US&Language=ENG&c at=REC&prod=HK%203485&sType=C

A 1977 Corvette L82 might be a classic, but you wouldn't want to compare specs, reliability, and conveniences to a 2008 Z06. 30+ years of scientific advancement goes a long long way.

"all everybody cares about now is surround sound"

Stick around here for a while and I think you'll find otherwise.

Don't get me wrong, I'd gladly take any spare 70's MAC equipment you have hanging around, or a '77 Vette for that matter, they are classics, but just writing off all new stuff is just wrong, IMHO.
$300 goes a very long way today. Excellent receivers, speakers, sources can all be had for a song.

Chris, if you haven't had the chance to listen to some new stereo equipment lately, treat yourself and go to a local Hi-Fi shop and see what it is I speak of. Even a Circuit City or Best Buy offers some very nice equipment, but I doubt you'll be able to audition it properly in that environment.

And for the record, I have a Kenwood KR6600 (circa 1980) I picked out of the garbage in pristine condition, not a true classic, but very nice nonetheless.

First I'd say, if you're happy with the Fishers, keep them.

I don't know what you listen to, but if $300 is your budget, the Infinity Beta 20 from The Audio Video Source http://www.theaudiovideosource.com/1BetaSeries.html for $250 delivered, or the AV123 X-LS (check their website for prices) are your best choices, IMHO.

I have the Beta 20s with my HK3485, and it's an excellent combo, but everyone here is sick of me singing the praises of the Betas, so try & get a listen for yourself if you can.

But you can spend as little as this http://www.electronics-expo.com/make-a-store/item/INFPRIMUS152/Infinity/Primus-P 152/42.html and still get improvements, IMO.

Be very careful everyone...

We don't want the OP coming back in four years and telling us we were wrong about vintage gear.
