I'll admit I didn't check for other threads..

I need to know of some good recordings that tend toward orchestral or whatever.

Stuff like David Foster's Carol of the Bells, I like.

Thanks.

Any orchestral music on the Reference Recordings label. Look at orchestral pieces on Chandos, BIS, Hyperion and recently Naxos.

.

What's a "good recording", Andre? Good production? Good performance? Good music? Of course, you want all three.

Go down to your public library and ask the nice person behind the desk your question.

Maybe the 'reference' thread here or the 'music selections'.
Read here Kid.

Look at $0.02 response in this.

I often listen on Amazon to jazz and classical and then buy if the label has a good reputation. Headphone listening is not bad as a gauge.

When I mentioned headphones, I'm talking about simple earbud stuff while auditioning on-line.

I don't know anything about that binaural reference in the link.

Thanks for the help.

I found a large library of stuff on my computer that I forgot was there. It's ripped from a CD at a higher bitrate than the CD, but oh well. I guess it doesn't hurt anything.

Obviously, it doesn't sound as lifelike as our performance (band) did today, but what can ya do? Well, I'm working on that.

I'll keep looking.

Listening with my Sennheisers is a lot different than listening with my Shure ear-buds.

Sennheisers would be nice...as would the Shure.

I'm just using some mid-line JVC earbuds.

I'm guessing the Sennheisers are more enjoyable??

Snapcat,

I have Sennheisers and Etymotics, both sound very good and have a very different presentation. With the earbuds, the music is in my head, while with the cans it's spreadout with a nice soundstage.

I can't say I enjoy one over the other. Depends on my mood.

Snapcat,

I would use my Senn's for pure listening, the Shure's are for portability but were better and more comfortable than any other ear buds I could find.

I prefer the Senn's to the Shure's if I am stationary.

I'd like to get the Shure's someday.

I'm still doing Sony Cd portable. No ipod/mp3 yet...maybe never. All I've read is that sound quality is so-so.
Well, maybe the shuffle for hiking or easy beach listening.

"All I've read is that sound quality is so-so."

Depends on the format, Apple or MP3 Lossless is your best bet, but 320 Kbps should be virtually indistinguishable under most listening conditions.

My Ultimate Ears SuperFi-3 sound pretty good, but like all in-ear headphones I've owned, suffer from poor fit.

Dollar for dollar, I still contend that the $99 Alessandro MS1 (By Grado) are the finest headphones on the market, alas they are superaural & best kept indoors. http://cgi.ebay.com/Alessandro-Music-Series-One-MS1m-headphone-by-Grado-NIB_W0QQ itemZ270194301605QQihZ017QQcategoryZ40137QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I think there's some device you can use which bypasses the iPod's circuitry and has much better sound quality. I'm not sure where I saw it.

I'd be curious to know what you're talking about?

You may or may not have heard of it.

I don't see the big deal, it's a docking station with a line out? Most docking stations have a line out, my Creative Zen Vision M has one in it's dock, and my Dell DJ has one built in.

Well good, then you can bypass the headphone jack and amplification.

I know I saw one that was supposedly designed for sound quality or something..
