I went to talk turntables with my dealer yesterday noon. I walked out with a used Rega P2 with a new belt and Grado cartridge. The price was right and I don't see new P5 type money freeing itself up anytime soon.

I'll post pic or two in System Pics thread later.

I had a BLAST last night spinning some of my old records. Stuff I haven't had out of the sleeves in 20 years. I love this hobby.

On the bus between U. Rhode Island and UMass, on the iPod and Etymotic ER6i's -
Tool - Undertow and Aenima
Pink Floyd - DSOTM

Soccer had a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in the last 2 minutes last night. Playoffs would have been a lock. There's still 3 more games to go though.

Picked up and listened to yesterday the following vinyl:

Stones - Beggar's Banquet and It's Only Rock & Roll
Mellancamp - The Lonesome Jubilee
Orbison - Mystery Girl

Echoes of Ellington - with Dianne Reeves, Randy Brecker, Bill Evans, Robben Ford, Tom Scott, O C Smith and others. This was a new sealed album and an excellent recording.

Found a couple second hand shops Nuck, the last ones (besides the sealed one of course) were in good nick and only required a wipe.

Art, yes it's a great recording. About 4 or 5 tracks with vocals and the rest instrumental. Great talent on this one.

Nice foray into Vinyl M.R.

Mike - I'm still going thru the buried treasures....trying to see what works and what don't.

Bob Seger's Night Moves.
Queen - News Of The World
Sweet - Desolation Boulevard, Give Us A Wink
Alice Cooper - Lace and Whiskey, School's Out, Billion Dollar Babies, Welcome To My Nightmare, Live
Al Stewart - Year Of The Cat
Planet P Project
Supertramp - BIA
Iron Maiden - Number Of The Beast
Joe Walsh - There Goes The Neighborhood.
Rush - Signals
The Cars - Panorama
Lou Reed - Best Of
The Eagles - The Long Run, Desperado
Styx - Equinox
HSAS - Through The Fire
Montrose
Floyd - The Final Cut
The Beatles - Sgt Peppers, Revolver, Rubber Soul
Emerson Lake and Palmer - Live In Concert
Willie Nelson & Merle Haggard - Poncho & Lefty

lolol...I had the vinyl stored in a couple of cedar chests...when I was going thru the albums earlier my 3 year old daughter came in the room and says, "Daddy, why do you have that coffin open?"

In many ways I feel like I'm bringing back the dead.

Thanks Art. This is stuff that I've been playing over the past few days though. I wish I had time to play all that music on a Tuesday! Sunday I had a friend over and we really hit a few good albums! My cd player has seen one track since I bought the TT. Some of the vinyl I have is in better shape than others...and obviously some of the recordings are better than others. But I'm really enjoying myself!

And a stop at the used bookstore last week payed dividends. Now if I could just walk into some of those Wodek-type deals!

Have you tried yourmusic.com ? $6.99 per cd is a great deal, and they have lots of titles. I can't partake because it's USA customers only, but if I was south of the 49th I'd be in there like a dinner.

Yep, I've been a member for quite sometime. I only have 80 in my queue now...lol! They have the same inventory as BMG, so I wait until BMG has a sale for less than 6.99 then use my yourmusic list to choose cd's to buy from BMG, works fabulous. Ofcourse I still get my monthly one from YM. Speaking of which they didn't bill me last month, did you have that problem?

Jennifer Warnes - Famous Blue Raincoat - The Songs of Leonard Cohen

Vinyl

I doubt that anyone on this thread would not stop whatever they were doing and just listen to this fabulous recording. The vocals are so clean and extended. The instruments, mostly orchestral are as real as I can imagine. The bass imaging is absolutely spot on. The horns are rich and resonant, yet contained in their exact space. I know that sounds like an oxymoron but I lack the skills to describe it any better. And I only heard the first 3 cuts when I stopped to post this. :{)

I can't wait to hear this on Vigne's newly deployed arrangement. Too bad I picked it up the day Nuck left town.

Never really listened to much 10cc.
Till over at Jan's place this week.
Damn! What a fine album/group. Gotta ask Jan which one (scotch) but that lp is as fine on the Mac/Zigmahornet/DIY sub as I have heard ina long time!
That band had Queen beat before the bell.
Truly terrific!
And the listening, BTW, is intensly specific and musical, in a very personal space, but room for 3.
A true pleasure!

And it ain't as low level as you might think, with just the mains @3 inch drivers!

Fun, baby.

They were one of the greats - I've been buying all their remastered cd's I can find. I wish I still had all the 10CC vinyl I gave away in the early eighties. Yes, a must with scotch or other fine subtances . . .

. . . or you won't feel the benefit.

No pics yet, but Gavin and Nuck you guys are gonna love this. I traded the Kenwood KR 6400 I picked up a couple of weeks ago for $10 and the KLH Model 17's I picked up for $30 for a Rotel RCD971 cd player with a Jim Ott (Northwest Audio Labs) installed performance mod, brand new condition in box with all of the goodies, manual packing materials, all of it plus a pair of Magnepan MMG's in the original box!!!

That's what I'm talking about!!!

Almost bought The Original Soundtrack yesterday, but the record was in fairly poor condition.

Bought and listened to in whole or part

Vinyl

Robert Cray Band - Who's Been Talkin - A remastered edition of his first ever album.

Elvis - Rock 'n' On - a double album of everyone's favourites

CD

Queen Latifah - Travelin' Light - First 9 tracks are great then it deteriorates. But it is a bit of this and a bit of that.

Art, congrats on your pick up - excellent!

Sold the Apollo on Ebay yesterday. Got a bit less than I had hoped but came out okay. Next the Nad combo.

All others out for a yarn shopping thing.
The big dog is warmed up for...

Tragically Hip, Up To Here.
The first 3 tracks are a grand exposition of what these Canadian boys can do.
This is 20 yrs old, and still their best, IMO.

Track2, 'I'll belive in you' is cruel, hard and relentless in it's intensity. If you give it a spin, you will do it again with the volume high. Guaranteed.

'Her Mother said 'kill him'
do so at your leasure
but desperate times call for desperate measures
So she went to the closet and pulled the old gun down
I'll put a bullet in his heart if he ain't home by sundown.

Yeah, 5:55 he comes walkin' throught the front door smilin'

Brutally effective.

You all should have this cd. My rec.

Art, you would just die for the little sub in JV's room, working with the little drivers in the Ziggies.
Seamless is the word.
The Mac240 amps ain't hurtin at all either...

We tried Dwight Yoakum, just for musicality, not my pleasure, and had a ball.
Beautifully overlapping rythms, and a drummer who might be too good to believe.
Nothing fancy, just carrying a 10 piece band is all.

Musicallity is an underused term, I think.

Yoakum's is a five piece band that sounds like a ten piece band. I swear each of those guys has four hands and the drummer has three feet. A classic example of back beat. Nashville jazz.

I was looking at the Ziggies with lust awhile back...man so much stuff and so little time. Thank god for the music!

Well, I've put the BA's in the clsoet for awhile and decided to try the B&W's with the Rotel CD player for awhile. The synergy is there however they only get down to about 70hz (approx 60hz in room). And at 4 ohms they are giving the poor old Sansui a workout. May switch back to the Boston's but I'll miss this synergy.

Haha...you guys...

I've been listening to the local alternative station (and others sometimes)...though I'm starting to wish there were a jazz station.

These are some of the songs that I've liked enough to put on here.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under The Bridge
Puddle of Mudd - Psycho
Sublime - Wrong Way
Journey - Who's Cryin' Now
Jethro Tull - Bungle In The Jungle
Van Halen - Hot For Teacher

I'm not completely sure why, but I seem to like the sound of music in my room more than in the main room.

Price seems to have an effect, but not much.

Room - about a $500 total retail not including tuner

Main Room - about a $3000 total including only the same parts as the other system

In the "better" one, there's definitely more detail and I can hear a LOT of things I never would notice with lesser systems. It also has way more output and bass capability than the other system. The dynamic and transient handling is great as well. It also shows bad sources more..which is not a great thing since I still have not gotten a hold of more good sources. The radio is fine most of the time though. It's those MP3s...The large system has four floorstanding speakers with 12" drivers with the front two measuring strongly to 40hz and the back two measuring strongly to 30hz...

The smaller system has two 4" full-range drivers with good response to 45hz and that's it...their output limit at that frequency is not that high though.

I think it's the frequency response of each room...or something.. that's doing it... the one I like sounds warmer and fuller.

What's up with that!?

I'm going to be fixing that in both rooms before too long...get some quality stuff...ya know.

The problem is knowing what, when it comes to amps and speakers.

My friend, who also happens to have no speakers that go below 200hz very well at all and who has no taste for sound quality, which he proved to me at school today saying it sounded great (his $30 mp3 player with the $5 headphones)...haha more like grating... Well, he has this huge collection of records.

I want to get some sort of turntable or something...since you guys seem to be raving about them..

Oh...I've got the upgrade bug, and I've got it BAD

Watch out...over the next few months...

Subs include super-low distortion designs with everything I could think of from multiple low distortion drivers running at low xmax with high headroom to super-inert distortion free enclosure enclosure designs with drivers in pairs opposing each other in each box for vibration cancellation to ample quality amp power to assure maximum performance possible up to the driver limits (driver-limited design)...along with many other things.

Headroom will allow for up to 25dB peaks at 105dB average level. It won't be anything you could achieve with commercial subs.

That's just the beginning.

I've got it BAD

Expect it to take shape over the next 12 months time.

Ahem, ...now back to our regularly scheduled programming."

It is with a bit of pride that I am to first to post;

Alicia Keys - As I Am
CD

Marsh bought it for the little one and they listened to a couple of cuts at club levels and called it a night. I went back into the media room, dropped the volume accordingly and turned it back on.

I don't know if it is the how the stars are aligned or what but I am enjoying the heck out of this release. The vocals, back-up singers, musicians, lyrics, are all creating quite the listening experience. I have not heard anything more than she was releasing a new CD this week so I don't know if it supposed to be good or if is supposed to suck, but I am really mellowing out to it. It is a pleasure to listen to and I highly recommend it to just about anybody.

Genesis - Seconds Out (side 3 - Supper's Ready)
Robin Trower - Bridge Of Sighs
Blue Oyster Cult - Cultosaurus Erectus
Leo Kottke - 1971 - 1976 (Did You Hear Me?)

Tons more to go thru.

I'm not surprised by your last post, Mike. She has a lovely voice. I'll have to pick that one up.

On my way to find Audioslave - Cochise (per Nick's recommendation of the "Your reference library" thread) I found:

Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground - vinyl
It is printed and manufactured in Italy and in mint condition. The music takes a little getting used to but if you like Lou Reed it's worth getting used to it.

Jeff Beck - Truth - also on vinyl.
Based upon Kevin Corr's suggestion above. I might have to wait until Saturday when Marsh is at work to spin this one from what I read in Kevin's link above in this thread.

No Audioslave tonight but certainly a good night of shopping. (Though neither of these puppies came cheaply.)

Good work michael-
Truth is actually a slow blues gig. It is pretty mellow. Hope you are not disappointed. I think a great late night groove.

I have been catching quick looks lately w/o joining in. Eavesdropping. I should make a few coments.
Art- Good luck! As John Prine said: "You're up one day, the next your down, that's the way the world goes around"

I have not heard Jenefer Warnes yet but have read great reviews. Put that on my list.
I have one Liz Wright. Mellow. Reminds me of Cassandra.
I love Diana Krall too. The Live in Paris is awsome too.
Still playing Patricia Barber often.
I had left a Sophie Milman CD in the Rotel and a few days later started it and when I heard that 1st song, a samba I thought it was one of my great bossa nova albums. Nice. For example today I played Elain Elais and Tania Maria.

Diana Krall's "Look of Love" in the player last night... gave myself the SACD treatment.

now listening to the latest Candy Dulfer release..."Candy Store". Mastering could be quite a bit better, but her sax sounds as smooth as I have ever heard it. She switched from her old Selmer to an Inderbinen (sp) nice improvement... I am quite surprised by the improvement. The weight and tone are still there, but oooh so smooth

We saw BB here in Alaska about 20 yrs ago. I love to see the old timers keep on rockin. He has appeared on quite a few collections of duets with other stars in the last few years, such as Ray Charles Genious Loves Company; Tribute to Fats Domino: "Goin Home", and other albums.

Gavin, speaking of smooth sax:
today I played Zoot Sims with Jimmy Rawles piano on Pablo. I have a lot of Pablo on both cd and vinyl. Pablo recruited some of the best pianos back in the day Oscar, Rawles and more.
Also Gene Harris piano w/Scott Hamilton. Talk about your smooth ballads. He is comming from the old Hawk and Bean (ie Coleman Hawkins, the 1st jazz sax, and Ben Webster).

Played a good JJ Cale cd today: Travelogue.
I am glad he got to record with Clapten too because Eric had such hits using JJ's songs- After Midnite, and the white powder song. Those were from his 1st LP which had Call me the Breeze (Skynard covered it).
Now playing- Trb to Fats.

Nuck, it was in Binghamton, NY, close to home this time. Great to finally see him play, though he did more story telling than playing it seemed. Still, he ripped a few great guitar licks on 'ol Lucille, and his voice remains top notch. At 82 years old I'm not sure how much longer he'll keep going on, go see him if you get the chance, I'm glad I did.

Jeff Beck - (with Ronnie Woods / Rod Stewart) - Beckola and Truth - vinyl double LP set.

Listened soothingly tonight, tomorrow we will try to see if it sounds different with the dial spun clockwise a couple of revolutions.

Listening to "Up the Green Hill" Tomasz Stanko...a gentleman I've had the pleasure meeting twice now. One of the greatest jazz trumpeters of our time.

Before that I listened to "Jazz at the Pawnshop" for the first time in years...you know that's some good swing music. Before that Wynton Marsalis "Live at Blues Alley".

Art: "...Listening to...Tomasz Stanko..."

So I was inspired to play my only Stanko cd: Suspended Night. Great stuff. And his band is so good that could be released as a piano trio album. When I got my vinyl back I was reminded how much ECM I had. This is well deserving of that tradition!

Now I have to order some Pawnshop.

I thought you would appreciate that. They really are exceptional. Both times I saw them everyone came away talking about the pianist...he is truly amazing. I had a nice conversation with them last year in Portland...very nice guys...a little in the way of translation issues, but when you want to communicate with folks you find a way.

Kevin,

The truth is , Truth sounded better louder. More like the review. I found it somewhat wandering at lower levels. Perhaps "low" and "louder" are subjective and we are really in agreement.

Nicholas Payton - Payton's Place

Roy Hargrove - Nothing Serious

I was wrong, my Sansui 6060 loves the B&W 610i's and with the Modified Rotel RCD 971 they are making beautiful music together!

I was beginning to wonder where everyone went. Been playing cds on the Rotel rcd w/ Mira3. That works! To follow Art, I dug out:
Roy Hargrove- Family,
Nicholas Payton- Nic at Night
They were both at the same Mt. Hood, Oregon Jazz fest how I became a fan. Payton did a big band show, tribute to Louis Armstrong. That band had a great blues sax man- Bill Easley.
At night, I keep playing Methaney-Meldau Quartet again.
Lila Downs- La Cantina
Brazil Blue- EMI collection
Patricia Barber Live
Bill Charlap Trio
Ray Brown w/Monte Alexander
Gene Harris w/Scott Hamilton
Billy Brag and Wilco- Mermaid Ave
Billy Brag and Wilco- Vol II
Tierney Sutton- Someting Cool (that is a true title!)

On vinyl- James Moody- Moody's Mood, Chess Masters Series recordings from 1957 and '58.

For Latin music fans, Cuban/Puerto Rico style the New JayLo- Mark Anthony movie sound track. Very depressing movie. Mark plays a drug addict who gets aids. No fun, but the music is great.

On Austin City Limits there was a young Scottish singer- Paulo Nutini (some name for a Scott!) He sounds like a very young Joe Cocker. Probably more influenced by John Mayer and Rob Thomas.
Then followed by an Austin Tex band- Grupo Fantasmo. More great latin sound.
and more.

Wonderful music Kevin...I love that Tierney album. I saw Nicholas at the Portland Jazz Festival 2 yrs ago and he was great. His band missed the plane and he had to play with some local guys....and one very scared 19 yr old college music major from the University of Indiana named Sophie Faught. Nicholas worked so well with her to get her over her fear and just let the music flow...he's a great guy. Sophie returned to fest last year with her own band...she's become something of a Portland legend.

Nick, Let us know when you get your hearing back...

Kevin, You're going to have to find a whole lot of garage sales to follow Art.

The Beatles - Revolver vinyl (earlier this week)

Snow Patrol - Eyes Open CD (earlier this week)

So I Marsh, and Allison (my daughter down from Chicago) can dance with Kelly, several passes of the following artists on the Saturn, often using the "Repeat Track" mode:

Avril Lavigne
Fergie
Alicia Keys

Currently enjoying:

The Band - The Last Waltz
Vinyl

I have the original LP but this link provides the best information on the song list and participating artist. Marsh, Kelly, and I are getting ready to dance to Van Morrison in a moment.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! (belated greetings to the Great White Northerners)

I mentioned this LP on my last post, The Beatles - Rubber Soul.

Well there is a little bit of a story to go with it. Nuck and Art will appreciate this post.

I go to this garage sale last Saturday and this lovely mid-50ish lady of the house asks "What are you looking for?". Wow, talk about playing Jerry Lewis to my Dean Martin, LOL. Yep, I tell her I am interested in LPs, have any?

Guess what.

About 200. None however in the sale.

It gets better.

She has them cataloged on a blue line pad on a table in the driveway. She wants to move them but does not know how to go about it.

Well dear, I think I can help get you started I am thinking.

First she tells me they are all stored away in some chest and are not readily accessible. Then she remembers she has a short stack that she can get her hands on.

I go through the short stack and pick out;

Bob Seeger and The Silver Bullet Band - Nine Tonight
Bruce Hornsby and The Range - The Way It Is
Phil Collins - No Jacket Required
Willie Nelson - Always On My Mind
Amazing Rhythm Aces - Too Stuffed To Jump

These are all in pristine condition. Now I am ready to sh!t myself as she does not know what to charge me and she has 13 original Beatles albums on her list. Santana too? Well, it's like a candy store. So now I got to figure how to make this work for me without pissing her off in the process.

So I go through her entire list in earnest now. I lay down all 13 Beatles albums plus another dozen or so on a page from her pad. So we are up to like 30 LPs. I knew I had to set a balanced price so I offer her $150 USD for everything. She thinks for a bit then says she is ok with $5 per album but would want more for the Beatles albums. Now I know I have not seen any of these for less than $25 in any kind of playable shape and if these are as good as the first 5 I picked out, WOW. So I offer her $10 apiece for the Beatles albums and $5 apiece for the other 16 total albums. Somehow the price is like $180. I did not understand her math and questioned her. Betty says something along the lines of $130 for the Beatles albums and $50 for the rest. So far so good I am thinking. So I pull out $200 and change as by now I am buying up her real garage sale stuff to give to Marsh for when she comes home from work. She being equal the opportunist as I says, hold on I will get your albums.

Now the twist (not Chubby Checker either). She comes out with everything I listed. They are not the same grade as what the first 5 I picked out from the first stack. Hmmmm (methinks)?

I mention that these are er, ahem, rougher than the first ones she brought out. She gave a reasonable answer, they were from when she was a kid, what did I expect? Well not wanting to say I was hoping to buy $1,000 plus worth of records for 20 cents on the dollar, I just shrugged. She adds, "Hey these ARE Beatles albums you know..." She has a good point there.

Then the pendulum swings back to my favor as not only did she bring out what I listed, she brought out about a dozen extras she thought I should buy.

I quickly pull each of the albums from their jackets and come up with about 8 (non-Beatles) that I offer to swap back to her for 8 of the ones in her "I should buy" stack. These 8 were of excellent quality.

So I end up with the following set of records in addition to the ones listed above for ~$200 (we want back in forth so much on what I was buying and what I was not, I no longer knew what was garage sale money and what as LP cash).

Albums Betty said I had to buy;

Spyro Gyra - Access All Areas
Maria Elena - Los Indios Tabajaras
The Paul Butterfield Blues Band
The Crusaders - Street Life 300 S.
Stuff - More Stuff
Stuff - Stuff It
Spyra Gyra - Alternating Currents
David Sanborn - Back Street

(Betty likes Jazz)

Then there the ones I listed which met the minimal FDA standards;

93 / KHL - 30 Boss Goldens
Barry White - Can't Get Enough
Willie Nelson - Tougher Than Leather (She said it was one of his original LPs)
The Love Unlimited Orchestra - White Gold
Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Joan Jett & The blackhearts - I Love Rock and Roll
The Moody Blues - In Search of the Lost Chord

Oh yeah, the Beatles stuff;

McCartney (She counted it as Beatles)
Introducing... The Beatles England's No.1 Vocal Group
Meet The Beatles! The First Album by England's Phenomenal Pop Combo
The Beatles' Second Album
Off The Beatles Track (Instrumental versions of THE BEATLES big hits...)
The Beatles Help!
The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night
Beatles VI
Revolver
The Beatles Yesterday and Today
Magical Mystery Tour
Rubber Soul
Beatles - Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band

So all in all I may have done ok, Rubber Soul was a little hissy but very enjoyable to listen to.

P.S. In addition to the above my daughter Allison bought for me yesterday;

The Band LP (previous post)
The Beatles - 1967-1970
The Beatles - Hey Jude

Cool! That sounds like fun.
I am encouraged by friends and my wife to sell my vinyl. Where to start?
Back in my vinyl days (1955 to 1991) I used to buy used ones like hell. Also splurged on the new. Got up around 3000 lps. Then 16 yrs ago I but them in storage along with a collection of maybe 1000 a musician buddy gave me when he moved to California. As those who helped my choose the Rega P3 know, I had intended to try to copy to cd as much as possible. Now I am sucked into the vinyl world and have not burned even one! Just listen when I have time. My friend was a bar band keyboard man during the 70's and 80's so he had a lot of stuff I don't even know.
Hopefully I will find the time to separate what I don't want and haul it to America some day (Seattle-Portland).
