I have a Marantz 7500 and an old 5-disc sony CDP (CE 525). I have a somewhat basic question that i want to confirm. I am of the understanding that if i use the analog output on the CDP, then it's the CDP's DACs; however, if i use the digital (optical) output, then it's the receiver's DACs than convert the signal.

is this correct? If it's not please correct me.

thanks,
-bill

Yes, you're right; see which one sounds better; hook them both up to different modes and flip back and forth. You might be surprised.

i think using the CDP's DACs has the slight edge in sound quality. I'm a bit surprised, i'll admit it. further critical listening is still needed though.

thanks for the tip.

W.R.:

Go with the DACs that sound better to you. Nothing else matters.

Many of us are paranoid, I think, optimizing the sound quality commensurate with a cost factor required to accomplish this. Attached are reposts of views, points and opinions on CDP DACs, jitter, transports, power supplies and twiddle dee.

William, you may find them of interest:

Then again, they may make you more paranoid.
