Newbie Subwoofer question

Excuse my lack of knowledge about HT. I just bought a Panasonic SA-XR57S 7.1 receiver to replace the receiver on my Panasonic SC-HT740 Home Theater System and while connecting it realized that there is no plugs for me to connect the speaker wire of the subwoofer to it. Instead it has a sub out which I need to use a monaural cable to connect. What are my options here? Can I convert the speaker wire to a monaural cable? My system is no where close to the setups you have here but since I am low on funds I would like to know if there is a way at least temporarly for me to get this to work before I have to go out and buy a subwoofer. If there isn't can someone recommend a cheap subwoofer that will work with my receiver? Your help or comments are greatly appreciated.

The receiver has 100W per channel. The sub is 4ohms and 320 watt.

Can you explain this to me? What is the subwoofer?
How are you wanting to hook it up? More info helps a lot. What are the inputs on the subwoofer? I'm not quite getting your words.

my setup is pretty much the Panasonic SC-HT740 Home Theater System. But then I replaced the receiver with the Panasonic SA-XR57S 7.1 receiver. The subwoofer is the one that came with the previous system and is a wired subwoofer with no power. It is the general speaker wire, negative and positive. The receiver has a subwoofer out plug. When reading the manaul it says I need a monaural cable but my subwoofer doesn't have a plug for this, only speaker wires which once connected to my old receiver. I just want to be able to connect the current subwoofer to the receiver without having to go out and buy once since I am low on funds because of christmas.

Oh it's a passive subwoofer. Do you have the old receiver? If you do you can use it to power the subwoofer. I can also explain how to do that.

I don't. Is my only other option is to just get a new subwoofer?

Yes it is. All you need to do is tell me your budget and what you will be using the subwoofer for, then I can make some recommendations.

Ok, np, I also need to know what local stores you have access to, and if you might consider ordering online.

I'm in NYC. So just about all the electronic stores here (Bestbuy,Circuit City, J&R, B&H). I just bought my receiver from J&R. I usually buy everything online though.

Well with the budget I'd recommend you get a Sony subwoofer that sells for $100. If you can handle it, you could try stepping up to The next Sony Model. I can't find one review that puts them down except for they're saying "Can't beat it for the price!" It should provide a good improvement over the sub that was in your other system.

If you can afford it IMO (in my opinion) the Paradigm PDR-series or some Klipsch's will will definitely beat out Sony.

So far these are the candidates. I am not trying to build a full blown out system till I buy a house. I was reading that the Onkyo was a better woofer. I can probably get B&H to price match the 99.99 price in J&R (out of stock though).

From what I saw it looks like the Onkyo will win in that price range for performance. As you said you want to wait until you move into a house so I think the Onkyo will provide all you need until then!

I ended holding off on the subwoofer since the Onkyo was sold out at J&R and B&H was selling it for $30 more. Then while searching craigslist someone was selling a Cerwin Vega sub with the center, left, and right speakers and 2 infinity surround speakers for 150. I negotiated with them and got it down to 125 for all 5 speakers. Now I have a 7.1 setup at home, granted it is not the best but everything is digital sound using HDMI passthrough on my receiver. I just rearranged everything last night, will be dusting off tonight and finishing the setup. So far it is what I want and sounds really nice.

Oh that's fine, I myself just purchased a Seismic 10 powered subwoofer from Paradigm. I only spent 3 hours setting it up and everything is so realistic and full sounding now! I definitely love this sub. I'm currently listening to to One Blood by T.I. and I can definitely feel the percussion. It also blends in very well.

Anyway good luck with your setup. It looks nice. I hope it sounds great and really excites you! OMG a picture just fell off the wall!!! OMG I have to go now be back later! AAgggh...!!!
