Cambridge audio remote volume only work with cd player?

So..I eventually decided to get a 2nd hand ca540a (to find the headphone output doesnt work grrrr). Its connected to my computer.Using the volume buttons on the remote doesnt work-will it only work when the amp is connected to a cd player?
