I'd like to build a subwoofer using an Adire Shiva driver and a 300W BASH amp in a sealed enclosure (got sick of my Athena P300). Does anyone have experience with these components? I tried some DIY subwoofer sites, but they seem to be on a low at this time... Thank you.

Srinivas, why these particular componants?
Have you used them before, or are they just handy?

Nuck, I remember from a long time ago, that the Adire Shiva was recommended on this forum for someone attempting a DIY project. The BASH amp is solely because HSU subs use them too, the STF-2 uses a 200W amplifier. Since I want to do a sealed box, I expect the power requirement to be more. Hence, the 300W amp. The sealed box is an attempt to get accuracy at the expense of extension and loudness. Since this is my first attempt at DIY audio, I dont want to spend too much (>$300) money. There are folks over on AVS forum who do a lot of subwoofers. I'm going to do some reading there to find better options but the above two remain default.

Srinivas, have you tried contacting Adire? Or e-mail Tim?

The combination you suggest will work together and both components have a strong following in the DIY circles. I'm not certain what type of information you are seeking. Adire has more than enough information on the Shiva to give you some idea what type and size enclosure you should use to get the projected results. There are also plenty of sites allowing you to model the project's outcome as far as enclosure and driver are concerned. There are pleny of good amplifiers on the market and there is no need to restrict your choice to a certain plate amp unless space is a consideration.

So, what exactly do you want us to tell you?

Nuck, I haven't yet contacted Tim or Adire. It almost seems too simple to be able to take a driver and amp, put em in a sealed cube and reach bass nirvana. Hence the tentative steps. I did some preliminary calculations and bought a piece of wood last evening. My initial attempts at carpentry were comic and costly. So I'll probably take the wood to a shop to get it done correctly.

Jan, thank you for the link. I found clear and concise instructions on calculations required to build a sub, as well as some practical considerations for enclosure design. I am slightly skeptical about the outcome of such a venture and posted here to be alerted to possible pitfalls. Popular projects on AVSforum DIY section on subwoofers aim primarily to achieve high volume at lower frequencies. The small sealed sub projects are fewer.

I'll report back on how things go, but it seems to me this might take a little while longer than I expected!

A sealed enclouse is recommended for the first time speaker builder because of its simpicity of construction and lee-way for errors. As long as you can build an air tight box, you can have an acoustic suspension speaker system. If you can't build an air tight box, as long as you can buy enough silicone caulk, you can have an acoustic suspension speaker system.

If you put the T/S parameters into a calculation program, you will get the correct results for a sealed box. As with transmission lines and quarter wave enclosures, you have the freedom to stuff a sealed box with fiberfill to get the sound you want. The program will guide you toward the correct amounts of fill material but you get to decide what is appropriate for your system.

Adire should have the information you need either on their web page or you can email their tech help. They usually answer within a day. If you have the T/S parameters for the Shiva, Parts Express or Madisound can give you the dimensions of the box you require and can probably supply a pre- assembled enclosure. Hunt around the internet and you'll find what you need. A sealed enclosure is pretty simple stuff. I wouldn't mess with a cabinet shop unless I really had to have a specific veneer on the enclosure.
