Yamaha vs Pioneer vs Onkyo

Todd Smith
I am adding an A/V Receiver to start a HT setup and am considering these 3 receivers:

1. Yamaha HTR-5550 $229 (Inexpensive, high current)
2. Pioneer VSX-D912K $289 (Awesome features)
3. Onkyo TX-SR500 $150 (Refurb)

I am leaning toward the Pioneer. I like the Onkyo, but am concerned about it being a refurb and also its LFE problem. I was set on the Yam, but the Pioneer came out...

Here's what it'll hook up to:
Sony 27" analog TV
Sony DVP-NS300 DVD
Toshiba HiFi VCR
Sony tape deck (rarely used)
Fluance HV-ATB Speakers
Sub to be determined later

I have a small living room...
It will be primarily used for HT use (75% DVD/Sports), 25% music

Price is absolutely capped at no higher than $300 for the receiver.

Let's here it!

I think you would be hurting yourself if you do not consider the Denon AVR-1603 as well. From mydigitaluniverse.com this can be had for $354.44 which includes the shipping.

But for sound reproduction and to add a little something extra to your music. Check it out. It is a 5.1 reciever that will play your DVDs and music through all 5 speakers as well. Or for a little more go with the AVR-1803 a 6.1 reciever.

If you're looking at the refurb Onkyo TX-SR500 from J&R, I think you can feel safe. I ordered one from there, and it has no trace of the LFE problem.
