I plan on getting a amp to power subs in my room. Do i have to hook the amp up to a reciever or can i hook it up to anyhtign that has volume control and can play cds. I already have a 3 disc mini system type thing. Can i use the main unit of this to hook the amp up to. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Its not clear what you want to do. Your mini thing needs to have pre out jacks to use a seperate amp. I doubt it has these. Your going to spend a considerable amount of money for an amp. Why not up grade the entire system. I dont know of an amp cheaper than $600-$700. Are you trying to do surround sound or just 2 channel stereo?

If you want to keep it simple and DIY check these: http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage.cfm?webpage_id=3&SO=2&&DID=7&CATID=43&Object Group_ID=505

Pick your subwoofer, build your box, install amp and you're done.

Either way, these amps hook directly to your mini-system speaker outputs and can still be used later if you upgrade to components.
