hi, ive read a lot about different ways to hook up car subs at home and whether or not using a car amp to do it is a good idea. Currently i have a 980W 2 channel 4 ohm amp to drive my 2 p2 subs which are about 600W together. I've seen some ads for power supplies such as http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?dp=F2C2D242E6720253D3D363F3B357E373637333135 313&stk_code=pyrps26kx&svbname=403&CA=Y
which i've heard could power a car amp at home. I was also wondering if this was not a good idea, if there are any cheap home amps that could power the subs. Ive seen some high wattage amps such as
http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?stk_code=pylpzr600
do you think either of these would be better than the other? i was looking for the cheapest way to fully power my subs in my home and if possible, put the amp to good use

thanks in advance,
marty

right, so if you think hooking the amp up to a power supply isnt a good idea, which home amp would you suggest would be the best to produce the best thump from the subs?

Sell the car subs and sell the amps.

Once you do that, use the money to buy a sub made for home audio.

Take a look at HSU research.

Home audio is not the same as car audio, discard whatever it is that you think you know about car audio and do not apply it to home audio.

well i definately want to keep my stuff, i just wanted to put it to good use in the meantime, because im without a car for a while. i've been told home receivers and home amps run car subs fine, but how many watts would be needed to drive them to their full potential? does it matter?

Who told you this? Some car audio guys?

Most car speakers run at a 4 Ohm load, there are very few home receivers that can drive that load. And if they can, they are not cheap.

It is not the watts you should be worried about, it is the impedance.

Didn't I just tell you to forget car audio?

I use 5 of these to drive 5-4 ohm load speakers. One should be able to drive your car subs, provided you connect it to a pre-amp.
