I recently acquired this ONKYO TX-SV646 for free from a friend who didn't want it because when it powers on, the display reads "protect" and it won't do anything else. Does anyone have any suggestions, know what this means, or how it can be fixed?

Sure. Open the case and start poking around. You have a meter, right?
No? Send it to the shop.

It will be pretty difficult,if not impossible to troubleshoot the unit without the MDS and schematic. You will also need a true RMS meter and a wideband O scope. Few people will have the latter. You could at least examine the power supply rail fuses to see if they are blown. STAY AWAY from the large DC power supply caps with any instrument made out of metal. On second thought, you had better consult a professional.

Can you really get a "watt metre" like you can get a volt metre?

that would be cool
