What is your opinion on Polk Audio floorstanders and subs compared to what else is out there. Im looking more towards the clean, warm, and rich sound comaprison being that I have a polk psw12.

Polk R-series: crappy, surround duty only, muffled weak tweeters

Polk Monitors: ok, good for mainstream low-cost receivers

Polk RTis: need beefy current to sound good, would not go bigger than RTi8s unless you have it

Polk LSi's: very pricey and also requires beefy current, but definitely their warmest, most musical line

Polk subs: generally get left in the dust by Internet-direct specialists Hsu and SVS for the same price or less

Given a choice between say an RTi10 or the Alegria Audio Emmas I'd take the Emmas by a mile...and with those, less need for muscular power.

The Lsi9s sure are pretty though, with those blue woofers. Lol over at clubpolk that's the main reason most people give for liking their speakers. But seriously I do love those Lsi9s.

The Emmas look great for the price though, look at that space age tweeter.

Don't know Emma, but I do know the RTi 10'S quite well. I love' em... they sound great with my HK, which seems to deliver all the required power in a 5.1 set up. There is no sign of stress or clipping at "reference" volume, which is certainly not my standard volume! In retrospect I wonder if I should have gotten the 8's since I have a powered sub (velodyne) but since they sound good and I got a good price for them anyway, I am very pleased over all.

Michael, try to do an in home audition of a power amp with the 10s, leaving the sub off. I have an HK430 with the Rti8s. I was amazed at the difference a power amp made in these speakers' performance at any volume. The 430 never clipped, but there sure was something missing. BTW the amp never went back.

Heh, its funny you mention that... Jan (without intending to) talked me out of buying an amp a few threads ago. Not so much by saying you don't need one, but by asking what it was that was missing that I was looking for the amp to provide.

So Kano, would this be an academic exercise in a sense since I almost never listen to anything without the sub, or is there an added value experience-wise to using the pre-outs with an amp whilst still employing the sub?

I guess what I am asking is, can these speakers do "better" with more power sans sub, or can they do more anyway, even with the sub still plugged in, i.e. different x-over etc...?

The speakers "opened up" generally speaking. In areas where the sound would be described as congested, there is much more separation. The bass response (even 80+Hz) is much improved. I have the sub set to L/R/LFE and have noticed a huge difference as the 8s start the note and the POS Polk 404 finishes it. What I'm trying to say is the entry of bass notes is more defined, and in areas where the note rolls up or down a touch, where there was once one note, there are now two.

I'd encourage you to at least place a good amp for the fronts in and see what you can hear.

Kool, I'll give it a try. Half the fun for me is fiddling with the system set-up, movies/music are the other half. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean laquer, pebbles, dots and tinfoil, I mean messing around with the settings and hooking in components etc.
