Active Crossover Opinions

I've been researching active crossovers to add to my system in the next few months. I'm looking for a 2 way crossover that allows frequency changes to be easily made. It should be as transparent as possible. The crossover is going to be used to roll off low frequencies to my main speakers (Alegria Lings).
This is what I've looked into so far.

Marchand XM-9. Nice reviews, lots of tunability, $599. http://www.marchandelec.com/xm9.html
Outlaw Audio ICBM. Lots of good reviews. Hard to find. $200-$300 used. http://www.outlawaudio.com/products/icbm.html
HSU Research High End Crossover. Marketing material suggests a nice product. No reviews. Concerned about the "Bass Optimizer" feature. $459 B-Stock available at $367. http://www.hsustore.com/highendcrossover.html
Paradigm X-30. Reviews suggest it colors the sound quite a bit... but it's cheap at $160. http://www.paradigm.com/Website/SiteParadigmProduct/ParadigmModels/HighPassSWCon trolUnits/ControlUnit_Specs.htm
HSU Research High Pass Filter. No reviews. Not a 2 way, but I could use the built in low pass filter on the sub. Only two pre-defined filters. Skepticial of the sound because of the price $100. http://www.hsustore.com/high-pass.html

Without actually being able to listen to any of these, I'm tempted to hold out for a used Outlaw ICBM. The other option would be the HSU High End Crossover as I could return it in 30 days if I didn't like it.

Any other products out there I should consider? Anyone have any experince with any of these product mentioned?

Thanks. Aaron

Why use a crosover if you are only doing a high pass filter at the Lings? Why do an active X-over?

Mostly because I can't find a decent active high pass filter. It would also allow me to have to option to bypass the built-in low-pass on the subwoofer with a higher quality one.

Why active over passive? It would seem to make sense to remove the lower frequecies through the amp as well as the speakers... in other words, why bother having the amp work at producing this part of the music only to block it at the speakers? I'd rather reserve that power for the music that I'll be able to hear thru that part of the system.

These are totally passive and therefore add no noise or distortion to the signal. They fit between source and amplifier, therefore relieving the amplifier of any low/high frequency duties. The HP1/LP1 combination will allow adjustable crossovers depending on the position of the couplers. This is the route I would take. I have a LP1 on a DIY sub and it works quite well.

Otherwise, I have no experience with the active units you mentioned.

Thanks Jan. Interesting option. For $29 each, they would be worth a try.

And therefore, Tim, you are awarded the first annual Boris Karloff/Frankenstein award for Audio Exuberence!

Bravo!
