Tone Defeat & 12 O'clock Mark

I have NAD 352 amp which comes with a Tone Defeat switch to bypass the tonal control circuitry. Here are two settings at which I listen to music:

(A) Tone Defeat ON
(B) Tone Defeat OFF but treble and bass both at 12 o'clock mark

I find that, under (B), the midrange is more solid and the soundstage is closer to me. Can someone explain why?

Since I don't know what a "solid" midrange amounts to, I can't answer the first portion of your question. As to why the soundstage shifts position (is that correct?), the answer would be the phase shift introduced by the tone controls.

By "solid", I mean more substantial.

Sorry, that still doesn't mean anything to me. Substantial means more of the midrange?

I can only guess, but I would say the tone controls are not actually flat when centered. Can you duplicate the sound of the midrange by adjusting the tone controls? Don't concern yourself with the soundstage, just try to adjust the controls to tonally match what you are hearing with the tone controls bypassed.
