I am looking to upgrading my 5 year old stereo system. I have already bought Polk Audio monitor series speakers. Looking for a receiver now. The budget limit is $400-$500. I tried and did not like Yahama/Onkyo too much for the kind of music I love (music is going to be my main use for this system).

I have heard Denon-1705, HK-135 and HK-335 in local stores and I like all of them to some or the other extent. Could you guys share your thoughts on these? Specifically I do not see too many people talking about Denon 1705.

Also, if there are any other recommendations, I would love to hear those. My budget started at $350 and since I got a deal for speakers, I could go to $500 for receiver.

Vikas, here you go:

A few caveats---very minor IMHO at this pricepoint: no pre-outs (would negate the whole point of a digital amp after all), subwoofer crossover only down to 80Hz, no room speaker EQ, primitive remote, no digital outputs, no OSD (onscreen display). Also may not be the best choice if you have lousy, overly bright speakers.

Just as some folks still prefer LPs to CDs and tubes to solid state, you might decide to stick with an analog receiver, I'll make no guarantees. But it's definitely worth hearing it to make up your own mind, in any case...it's a whole different animal!

I bought a refurbished HK335 direct from Harmon audio on ebay so it has a full warranty. The total cost, with shipping, was under $400, which is within your budget. I wanted the extra power of the 335 over the 135 and 235, and like you I listen to mostly music.

I don't know how it would match up with your Polks, but I think it would be a good match. I haven't listened to the Denon so I can't comment on that.

I can't tell you what you should get, but I hope that helps a little.
