Does anyone know if its worth spending the extra money on the Yamaha Rxv 4600 as opposed to the 2600?
The specs seem almost identical.
Also does anyone know if I can operate a separate power amplifier with these units? I would like to use the amp for the front speakers and the Yamaha for the rest.
Thanks

Please consider something wlse other than a Yamaha receiver. Many have had good luck, but those of us who have had problems will agree with the Better Business Bureau that Yamaha service is abysmal. The BBB gives Yamaha an F, look it up I wish I had before I made my purchase. Other receivers are comparable and take very good care of its customers like Harman Kardon and Denon, a bit more upscale than a Yamaha and I can personally vouch for Harman Kardon service.

If you don't a have problem with the Yamaha you have a fine receiver and you should be pleased. If you have a problem, well I'll be as nice as possible, use the dumpster and go buy another manufactures AV receiver. Don't gamble and buy a Yamaha receiver. My dead RX-V2500 is a testament to my words of caution. Why gamble?

Yes you can use an amp with either of those units, but with an amp why bother spending that much money when for $300-400 you can get the RX-V657 instead?

HK, Denon, and Pioneer receivers in the same price range will also have amplifier pre-outs.

A little better pre/pro with 2600 and 4600.

Unfortunately most AVR's have abysmal service records. Too much stuff in one box. Marantz and HK, both very good sounding AVR's have some of the worst service records (QC problems) in audio. NAD same difference. If you want greater reliability buy a pre/pro and power amp. I bought a good mid price AVR (Yamaha RX-V657) and an amp and called it good. BTW the Yamaha sounds very good for the money spent. Certainly not the be all end all, but not bad.

Dan, Edster would like you to buy a life sized replica of his POS Panasonic receiver. There I said it for you. Slightly different wording I suspect.

oh no Dan, I'd like you to buy the actual Panny xr55 masterpiece and AB against either Yamaha (2600 or 4600) with some non-bright speakers.

Well on second thought, no I wouldn't, because if you ended up preferring the Panny you'd end up on Art's pout list...

Ain't nothin' worse than having Art pout at you, believe you me! LOL

Edster:
I've just had that POS phanny 55 playing in the background and it gave me a freakin' migraine... my sinuses acted up, my head was pounding, and my back was killing me. Soon as I switched it off, I felt RE-BORN and ALIVE, kinda like the first time I had Angelina J. and Jennifer G. over. (Angelina: CALL ME!!)

You ever get a chance to hear Cambridge Audio's Azur 540R?

Cambridge products have more than average QC problems. I've heard most of their products and they sound very pleasant. Their Azur 540D dvd player may be the best sounding affordable DVD player out there. As far as receivers they have a new one that is expected to be released shortly that will be a step up from the Azur 540R.

Strange, I've had this incredible Panny for 3 days and it has dramatically lowered my blood pressure and my blood sugar, and while giving me my first non-Viagra WOODY in about 30 years.

Too bad Angelina Jolie was not in the vicinity!
