Set Me Straight

Hello all,

Okay, first time poster here -- and my first one's a long one (sorry). I am somewhat confused about all of the choices available for stereo and A/V. I understand what an A/V receiver does, but I'm not sure how amps, pre-amps, integrateds, or pre/pros fit together. For example, what exactly is a pre/pro and what is its function?

Real quick bio: I am looking to put together a great-sounding system for an equal balance of music and HT. I don't want the music quality to suffer by simply going with an A/V receiver (unless there are receivers that handle music well also), but I'm not really sure about how to set up another system that favors music and movies. Would you recommend getting the A/V receiver AND a 2-channel receiver just for music? And would that be a 2-channel integrated amp, a pre-amp, a pre/pro, etc? Or would just an A/V box handle it all well? I'm obviously lost here.

Is there a spot on this forum (or anywhere else on the Web) that breaks down the roles each of these components play and how they work with one another? Or what would you recommend for a great movie experience without sacrificing pure music listening?

Thank you!

Brad

Brad,

Jan has given you some great reading for educational purposes and to allow you to make some educated decisions.

Here's a site that I started that Jan and others spend considerable time on with my education. Hope it proves helpful. Some it speaks directly to your question and some will go over your windshield as it did mine but you'll find some of the issues you raised addressed in it. Good luck, Dave

The best thing to do is visit various HiFi shops and get some hands on experience on a variety of topics.
