Upload"Earthquake" premiered with a dramatic new innovation in motion picture sound known as "Sensurround" For the first time audio was an integrated part of the movie experience through special effects. The concept required large powerful bass cabinets which would provide very low frequencies in order to shake the movie theater, thus simulating a real earthquake. For this purpose the "E" bass horns and woofers were developed. These were 18" Woofers in a folded horn configuration. The internal path length of the horn was 6 feet with a cutoff frequency of 33 Hz. Sensitivity of the system was an Incredible 106 dB at 1 watt / 1 meter. "Sensurround" technology and Cerwin-Vega were honored with an Academy Award for Special Technical Achievement in 1974.

The bookshelf features a single 6 1/2 -- inch fiber impregnated woofer and a proprietary waveguide to control high frequency directivity. The center channel version features two 6 1/2 -- inch woofers with the waveguide located in the center of the enclosure. Each model offers a power handling of 125-watts.

The four tower models are available in 10-inch, 12-inch, 15-inch and a massive dual 15-inch version. Offering three-way performance, each speaker features a proprietary high and mid frequency waveguide. The high frequencies feature a 1-inch soft dome tweeter. A 6 1/2-inch fiber impregnated woofer delivers the mid frequencies and the lows feature a cast frame, high excursion woofer.

Finally to round out the Classic Series, two powered, bass reflex subwoofers are available in 250-watt, 12-inch and 300-watt, 15-inch models. Both speaker's feature level controls and a continuously variable crossover from 40 Hz to 150 Hz to tailor the bass response to your environment and personal preference.

The actual setup consisted of six speakers; four large speakers behind the screen, and two on a platform in the back of the theatre. To give you an idea for the size of the speaker cabinets, two featured Cerwin-Vega "Model W" horns 8 ft. long, 4 ft. wide, and 4 ft. high. The other two had Cerwin-Vega "Model C" horns 1 ft. wide and 5 ft. high. Each speaker was driven by a 1000-watt amplifier, which was controlled by a special optical control track in the film, in addition to the normal 4-track magnetic soundtrack for voices and music (which, strangely, was in mono, and not stereo).
