Two Subwoofers One Output

I just acquired two speakers from a friend's old mini system. I have a component setup with a Technics SA DX-950 receiver. Both of the speakers from the mini system have two inputs, regular speaker wire and a subwoofer RCA type plug. I am planning on hooking up the speakers to channel B and I am wondering if it is possible to splice the subwoofer plugs and make them into just one. Can this damage the receiver or the woofer? Is it safe to do this? Am I retarded? A few questions to ponder...

If the Technics receiver has left/right pre-outs and the subwoofers have a high pass filter, your solution is easy:

Hook one sub up to the front right pre-out and the other to the front left pre-out. Turn the sub "off" in the receiver settings. Set the sub's crossover - 80 Hz is THX standard.
