Before folking out mega bucks for a receiver, try to hear onkyo TX-LR552. It is a digital receiver with discreet electronics - sounds smooth like an upscale piece - now you too can have luxurius sound for not so much money !

How does this compare to highly-touted digital Kenwood VRS-7100?

They are both currently available at the same price point.

I am just curious at this point; I am not interested in buying another receiver, since I already have an AV receiver and an old late 1980s Onkyo Integra TX-890 2-channel mega receiver (380 watts per channel of dynamic power into 2 ohms).

They unfortunately don't make them like that anymore.
:-(

Sorry - haven't heard the Kenwood, but if you heard a digital amp, you would know what I mean - a great value on audio right now.

They will continue to get better no doubt - since it's new technology, but even now, they sound much better at the price point.

This is a very nice looking unit too and great for confined places. It is best for den type of setup with fairly efficient (>6ohm) speakers. I considered this for driving my Maggie MMG-Ws in the den but it just didn't have the juice for it.

The street price is unbelievable for such an unit.
