PSB 70R opinions on repair?

I have a pair of PSB 70Rs I bought new in 1986. At the time, I chose them over the comparable Boston model as I preferred the sound. I replaced the passive radiators a few years ago when the foam cracked. Now both woofer foams have done, resulting in noticeable distortion at higher levels. As soon as I found the problem, I unplugged them, but it went for several months before I checked the foam. I can get them repaired with new foam for $46 each, but I'm concerned that I may have damaged something by using them in this condition for some time. I use them for home theatre in a large room with high ceilings, so levels can get quite high. Is there a way to tell if damage has been done, or do I just get them repaired and hope for the best?

The tweeters sound fine, in fact, they still sound great at lower levels with minimal bass.

I'm also interested in how these speakers compare with current models if anyone is familiar with them.
