I've read about the differences between moving magnet and moving coil cartridges on turntable arms. This was at the time I had already bought my little starter system back in the eighties, so presumably everything was matched. Now I'm getting back into vinyl with the current seperates I've owned since, I'd like to know what's what on this score.

The descriptions seem pretty self explanatory - the part that moves obviously makes the difference. But what difference exactly? I also am aware that some phono stages take the MM, others the MC - but how would I go about finding out which one my amp is set up for?

Some amps have a switch, either external or internal, which says to me it's important to know.

I have an old Ariston (can't remember the model number) hooked up to the phono stage of a NAD 3225PE. The cartridge is a Shure SX series I think.

Please, anyone enlighten me on the specifics of magnets and coils please?

Many thanks,

V

Since posting above, I've noticed a MC / MM debate going on, right below. I'll check this out first and return here if I need anymore assistance.

Thanks again,

V
