What will ATI's H.264 do for me

I downloaded the H.264 encoder from ATI for my graphics card and I wonder what it does for me now. I know that it will encode Blu-Ray and HD-DVD but wouldn't I need a DVD drive that can play these formats? What does this encoder do for me right now?
