My friend has an '06 Dodge Ram 1500. Last night we checked out the method to install a unit. Two screws and some clips and we were in. One problem we see is; the two knobs stick out. So, a typical double din unit would fit I assume...but it would have two ugly half circles from the missing knobs the stock head unit had. I can post a picture if needed.

He talks like he wants a flip out unit. Now, I've only really seen those in single din...the whole purpose was to have a screen bigger, when you can't have a double din...right? OR do they make double din flip outs? (Sounds kinda overkill). His budget is around $300 last I knew. And he also wants to be putting in some 6x9 down the road... What would you guys recommend as a nice flip up/down screen unit...and then a nice double din unit with the budget of $300?

Thanks in advance,
Nic

Hi Nic, does this Dodge Ram come with the Navigation system or not? If it does, then yes, you can install a Double DIN Deck. If not, then you will have to settle for a Single DIN Deck with a flip out screen.

Last I checked, no, there is no Double DIN Deck to my knowledge that has a flip out screen feature. Kinda pointless if you ask me anyway...

With a budget of $300, your not going to be getting a high quality flip out screen Deck, but there are a few that could be looked into:

Absolute ATV920BT:

In all honesty, I think your friend should save up a little more money to buy a more decent Deck like this one below:

No navigation, but the unit is stock & I'm pretty sure it's a double din. What else would it be?

Well, the Dodge Ram's of that year came with 2 different versions. With or without Navigation systems.

The version what came with a Navigation system was a Double DIN.
The version what came without a Navigation system was a Signle DIN.

It could very well be possible to fit a Double DIN, but it might require some modification. After cracking out of the Dash, check and make sure that there isn't any obstructions that would prevent a Double DIN from fitting. If there are none, then go out and look for a Dash Kit for a Double DIN and install it.

Here's what it looks like (similar. Found pic on web. The hu and dash is all the same)

When we opened it up it looked like a double din would fit just fine...but looks like there would be two holes from the round knobs you can see what I'm talking about in the picture. (since it would be a rectangle vs. what you see in that picture with side knobs).

Here is an Aftermarket Dash Kit that you can use:

Ah yes, that looks like it has the cover. However, are you still saying it's not double din?

Haha, well it does "appear" to be a Double DIN, but without actually being there to look myself I couldn't be sure.

I looked for a Dash Kit for a Double DIN of that year, but was unable to find one. If you actually purchase a Double DIN Deck off of sonicelectronix.com for the selected year of that Dodge Ram, it says they will provide a free Dash Kit for you, but there are no pictures to see if it will actualy cover the two knob spaces.

If you guys are dead set on installing a Double DIN Deck, then I would suggest purchasing a new Dash Bezel for Dodge Rams that have the Navigation System off of Ebay. This way you wont need any Dash Kits, or have to worry about the two knob spaces:
