All the time I hear people saying peak power is the power a speaker can handle for a short period of time. That is not true. That is max power. Peak is the power that is being made at the peak of the wave. This can be tolerated just fine by the speaker continuously, as it is directly related to RMS. RMS power is .707 times the peak power. It is the root mean square of the wave over a whole cycle. MAX power is the one that is only for a short period, not peak.
Sorry for the technical jargon, this one has bothered me for quite some time.

i posted a thread similar to yours. i'm tired of seeing people brag about their "1000 watt" peak systems when in reality they only put out 300 watts rms.
