Sub and Amp combination problem

From a friend:

"Well after researching the specs on the amp it appears to be a two channel amp that can be bridged to put out 600 watts at 4 ohms. Problem is the sub is 3 ohm which means the amp will try to put out more power and might overheat."

Will this be a big problem?

RF's punch series amps are not the highest quality, so this may or may not work. If the amp cannot handle the 3 ohm bridged load, you will most likely blow the amp.

You can hook it up and try it, just be aware that you run the risk of blowing the amp if it doesn't work.

It may also appear to work at first and slowly burn out the amplifier.

No, as long as you set the gain properly. When using this calculator, enter 3 ohms and 500 watts, since thats the amount of power you want to give that sub.

You should get 38.7 volts

Just follow the instructions, using that voltage. Check out the interactive tutorial if you're still unsure of what to do.

you'd have to try REALLY REALLY hard to blow that sub with that amp. I think the amp would give up the ghost long before the woofer.

If the gain is not set properly, I think it would be very possible to damage that sub with that amp..........

Say he cranks the gain way up and sends it a near square wave of 500 watts..... thats just a little less than what the sub is rated for, which could do some damage.

the amp isn't designed to run below 4 ohms bridged, or 2 ohms stereo.
doing so will cause the amp to clip and go into thermal protection mode.
the clipping is what can damage the sub.

for a 10W7 you want a JL 500/1 amplifier
its designed for that load.

A kicker ZX1000 would work well. 500 @ 4, 1000 @ 2, so it should give @750 give or take at 3 ohms.

The JL 500/1 is the first choice.
