How do I prevent clipping?

I'm still really not sure exactly what clipping is..

I've read the defitition over and over again, but I still don't get how you can "ask an amplifier to deliver more current to a speaker than the amp is capable of doing."

This is the system I'm getting:

2 - 12" Sidewinders

--------
1- Massive Audio P1000.1 Mono Amplifier

--------
1- Eclipse CD-8445 Head Unit

--------
1- Dual 12" Dual Ported Box
--------

Will I have to worry abot clipping?

the amp can send a clipped signal to the subs if its not being given enough power from the alternator. thats what mine does because i have 1500 rms on my stock alt and sometimes it blows my subs because they clip sometimes but i just take them back so just make sure you have warrantys on them

So I shouldn't have to really worry about clipping at 1000w RMS?

a simple formula, DMM, and a test tone will work just as well.

two steps to avoid clipping:
set the input sensitivity (gain) on the amplifiers properly, and
don't turn the ehad unit up past about 3/4 of full volume.

clipping is simply when there isn't enough electrical power to produce the volume (signal amplitude) you desire. The result is that instead of a sinewave signal like the amp would normally produce, you get a square wave, or at least one where the peaks of the wave are "clipped" off. The result is increased heat across the speaker coils, which can cause them damage.
