Greetings, I have a clarion 50X4 head unit connected to two JBL amps, the sub amp is a 600 watt rms the other is 180 watt rms 2 channel.

I have 50 watts RMS Ultimate componant speakers in the front, and a set of infinity 6x9 100 watts rms in the rear.

I also have a cap connected to the whole system, 2.5 farad/.

The problem is that when i change my bass from the unit from -1 to 0, or 0 to 1 i get a cracking noise comming from the speakers in the car.

I doubt it being my speakers since they are relatively new, 4-6 months.
Can it be a defective DXZ825 clarion head unit????
Or perhaps my ground wire isnt think enough????
or bad wireing?????
thanks in advance folks

I been reading about alternator issues, i drive a pontiac sunfire 2001, i guess it would be wise to have a stronger new alternator put it.

if this happens at lower volumes I doubt its the alternator.
it may be a defective head unit
it may be a bad ground which you could check
its possible you just need high pass filters on the fronts and rears to block bass.

this is one that's easier to tell by hearing and playing with it myself

It only occurs at high volume, so maybe it is the alternator

my ground hasent been touched since i had it installed so i dont think its that

it very well may be the head unit

i never needed high pass filters before, so that huldnt be the case either

so im left with either a defective head unit, or an weak alternator...does any else know what else might cause the pooping sound comming out of my speakers when i turn the bass up during high volume

the high pass filter may still help if the compoennts are bottoming out at higher volumes.
that's why you want to use a high pass filter for them, and stick to letting subs handle bass response.

Thanks for your responses so far glasswolf, i will have a check made on the ground and put in some filters.

but i have a question, given my current setup
50X4 clarion radio
600 rms JBLamp on bass w/ two 12"infinity reference subs
180rms JBL on 4 speakers
and a 2.5 farad cap

how strong an alternator should i be using, and for fun do u happen to know what is original in an 2001 sunfire.

ok the radio is really about 22w x 4 RMS (ballpark) 50w is a max rating., so...

say 90wRMS for the radio, at most
600wRMS from the sub amp plus 20% (class D)
180wRMS total for the mids/highs? I take it that's instead of using the clarion? so 45w x 4 instead of that clarion power, and add 40% (class AB)
your system at full output would draw around 75A of current total, added to the stock rating of your car's alternator, we'll say 70A as a guess.
you'd want to look at a new alternator around 150A
that'd be enough with a little extra reserve.\

well all i can think of is something might be wired wrong..

or you might need a mini amp for all the speakers..

my speakers would crackle too when i turned them up loud...but thats because i had 3 pairs of 6x9s all wired together...back when i had no subs...when i got subs i took out 2 pairs of 6x9s and now nothing crackles when the vol. is turned up.
