The sub is a MTX 12" that takes 300 RMS in about 1 cube sealed. The car is a 2004 WRX STi with kappa components and eclipse HU.

My friend has absolutely no money to spend on an amp but he already has everything else needed to hook up the sub. Can he get something half decent for under $100 on ebay?

well, whatever it takes to not have to screw something in...I figured there would be some really strong tape that could do the job for a box that would only weigh maybe 10 lbs

Oops, my bad, I've been looking at so many DVC subs I wasn't thinking about wiring a SVC.

Sub is MTX MZS1204: 300 RMS, 4 OHM SVC

So my friend needs an amp that is 150 x 2 @ 4 Ohms or 300 x 1 @ 4 Ohms

What is solid amp that will last a while. Used/refurb/new/whatever

the problem with tape is that amps get hot and the glue will melt. you will have a big big mess. Depending on the vehicle you have you could find a spot where the amp fits and built a enclosure for it the size of the spot it is in so it doesnt move around. I have to let you know it will be very easy to steal if wanted. Why dont you want ot drill a few small holes? you can never tell they are there through the carpet.

I keep telling my friend that the tape idea is dumb, because he will have to screw the amp down for sure, so he might as well put a small onobtrusive bracket to hold the sub for all the high speed driving he is going to be doing...

But the sub and box together way less than 10 lbs, so I'm sure there is an alternative to drilling..

yeah tape just won't work! you know what might work though velcro the whole bottom plate of the amp and stick it to the carpet. That will prob be his best bet. If you want a seriously GREAT amp that puts out 300watts look into that soundstream:-)
