I am getting ready to install my second Kicker SX1250.1 amp in my 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix (GTP) figuring that this willhave quite a bit of draw how much should I upgrade the electrical? I know about the +/- cable upgrade (ground straps too) but as for as alternators go what should be a good amperage to go with? How about a battery size? thanks...Polo.

a yellow top is a must! HO alt around 250a will do it. Upgraded wire also.

Well, a yellow top isnt really a must.. But a deep cycle battery should definately be considered. If your alt at idle produces enough current to power your system, then dont worry about a deep cycle if your battery is fine.

However, chances are your alternator dosnt, so then yes, I have to agree with B about getting a deep cycle.

Battery size isnt all *that* important, as long as you get a good battery, it should be sufficient.. (However, I would still get the biggest one that fits). At 14.4 volts, your two amps alone are pulling roughly 173 amps of current.

You should definately have 0 gauge wire, as well as upgrade your big 3.

In all honesty, if you're not running any other amps, and dont have a lot of electronics etc hooked up to your car, even a 200 amp alternator should suit you well. Your max current draw is going to be a little above this, but not much, and that's where having that nice battery comes into play, as a class D amp isnt always pulling it's max RMS, etc.

Then you need to decide if you're going to want a capacitor (close to your amps) or even a 2nd battery. (I run a 2nd unisolated battery, to help out during city driving.. a lot of stop lights etc.. Drains one battery pretty quickly).

I'd get a 150 at least. Anything over 200 would be overkill IMO unless you're going to be blasting test tones at idle all day long. Battery upgrade is a personal thing. If your current one is in good shape I wouldn't worry about it. The alt is what will shoulder the load.
