my friend says that you can take a 2 channel amp and bridge it into 1 channel, then take two subs and wire them in series. Does this actually work?

depends on amp and ohm load, usually it will work if is a dual 4 sub if runnig 2 or 2 single 8ohm subs

you can take a two-ohm stereo stable amp and bridge it if the amp supports bridging. you'll have a 4 ohm stable amp when bridged.
you can wire a pair of 2 ohm subs in series for a 4 ohm load then.
you'll get the same end result and same power per sub as if you just wired one sub to each channel in stereo though, so why bother?
