there's no best. One guy's best is another's so-so.

There are several brands that make the debate.

That's not entirely true. There are some brands that can be considered the "best" in their class.
McIntosh, Sinfoni, Treo, and Zapco are up there.

what about Arc Audio ?

I was looking to get this amp for my 2 jl 12w6v2's from them direct since there are no dealers around. $689 plus shipping / Jonathan says its one of the best out there and has excellant build quality.

Then there's Brax, and US Amps, and JL (often discarded b/c they're relatively common, but still excellent amps)...
Gotta mention phass -- any amp maker that has the balls to charge 5K for 80w MUST make great amps
There are a lot of good ones - still hard to say there's a "best".

"US Amps are powerful but don't sound very good."

are you out of your mind or just totally ignorant? You've never heard one, admit it.

In addition to the ones mentioned above, TRU Technology also makes excellent amps.

I am really surprised that no one mentioned ppi art series. I just recently purchsed a measly a200 and it makes ALL the difference in the world.

PPI Art is up there, just harder to find these days. In that case, I'll go ahead and mention the 1st gen Orion SX amplifiers and Orion XTRs.

cobalts were Orion's economy line of amplifiers. they're ok, but not the quality level of their other products of the time.
when you ask about the best amplifier no price limit, specify details, like what it'll be used for, power range, class AB or D, etc..
different amplifiers will be 'the best' depending on what the application is you want the amplifier for.

It disappoints me to see when someone asks what the "best" amp is, the "best" always seem to be the older models that they no longer build... Upsets me really, to think that they don't build amps quit like they used to...

there are still good amps being made, and like the best amps of former days, they are still well outside the price range of most buyers
