I just bought a JVC KD-S680 CD deck and I installed it in my Ford Taurus Wagon but its not working right. The deck just doesnt seem to turn on completely. It accepts CD's and ejects them, the clock comes on briefly when display button is pushed, and the display lights up temporarliy but then the display cuts out and nothing happens.
I double checked the wiring and it seems ok. Black=ground, Yellow=battery, Red=ignition. Right?

Any ideas what could be happening here?

thx,
mf

you don't match colors to the factory harness.
you have it wired wrong.
get the ford wiring harnesses from sears or a car audio shop, best buy etc..
use those to match wiring.
get the manual for the JVC as well.

friggin board seems to have lost my account AGAIN
I'm starting to dislike this web board software a LOT.

if you already cut the wiring harness out of the ford, give me the year of your taurus and I'll get you the ford harness color codes
then you can match them to the JVC wires which I assume you know the codes for

The easiest way is to just use a circuit tester, find the wire that is only on with the key on and off with the key off, then hook your ignition (red) wire from your head unit onto that, then find the wire that is on all the time, regardless of key position, then hook the battery (yellow) wire to that, *NOTE* Just be sure that you dont find the wire for the dome lights, most likely you are working with the doors open so find a way to keep the pressure switch for the lights off. The ground wire is pretty self explanatory....

I want to hook up a pair of subs to my factory deck in a 99 taurus wagon. I think I found the brain for the head unit in the spare tire compartment. Now I just need to find out what wires are the ones for the rear speakers so that I can hook up the Line out converter. If someone can tell me if this really is the brain taht I found and what are the wire colors and position for the brains harness (is there and output and input harness?)

my girlfriend has a '96 ford taurus. it seems to be a "one-off" car. no adapter kits fit it to install an aftermarket cd player. the wire colors don't match any taurus manual skematics either. it had the oringinal head unit in it and never appeared to have been removed before. i know that on some fords you had to order parts by monthly instead of yearly models...can anyone point us in the right direction?

I'm looking for wiring information for a 92 Topaz. This car has the factory amp and I am trying to bypass it. My problem is that the previous owner chopped the harness by unplugged the bypass plug in the dash, cutting the plug off, and then running new speaker wires. What makes it worse is that he did a very poor job.

I'm no stranger to doing ford radio's and have worked with the factory amp before. My goal is to try to fish out the wiring that goes directally from the dash to the speakers and put the regular plug back on. I have verified that all of the original speaker plugs are in the doors/trunk. None of the wiring guides I've seen so far match up with what I'm looking at.

Once I get past the amp, I suspect that the wiring should be the same as a non amped car. I want to make I have the right color codes for the wiring before I go cutting or trying to fix anything. Both power plugs appear intact and working. I just need to splice the speaker wiring back up.

If you have any information you can email it to dagr8tim at gmail.com

I got a question for u guys, riddle me this, i've got a pioneer head unit that worked fine...then I hooked up my subs and they worked fine...about 2 days later I got a loud "FOOP" from the subs, they still work if I have the volume at about halfway but anymore than that and they "FOOP." But that's not my question my question is the head unit still comes on and I have sound that comes out of the subs like nothin' is wrong with 'em...but none of the other speakers in the car work. Ponder! I've checked the fuses and none of them are blown but I have no highs nor mids only lots of base. Frustrating correct!? Also whenever I turn my headunit on I get a little pop out of the drivers side front speaker, but then nothing else...wtf! Help if you can, much appreciated. P.S. everything is wired correctly. Could it be a short in the front drivers side speaker since it pops when I first turn it on???

This I think will be for Glasswolf. I have a 98 winstar and I'm trying to mate a JVC deck to it.
Being a brilliant person I cut off the Ford plugs and now I'm stuck. I can not find the Accessory wire on the Windstar. I have constant power from the battery but not through the ignition.
Your post about the wiring for the Taurus? Would my Winstar be the same? the colors seem to match.

just a little advice for those who are installing their new systems. Go out, spend the 10 bucks or so and pick up the adapter for your car. I found one for a '95 Plymouth Acclaim, so im sure you can find the one for your application. You can pick these up at Walmart for god's sake. Makes life SO much easier. They just plug into the factory plug, and have all the wires already labelled. Then, the wires from the deck are usually labelled too. just match them up. like i said, makes life a lot easier.

---Just an FYI, I was looking for info on the JVC KD-S680 (how many RCA outputs) prior to making a purchase, and I find people not able to locate wire codes for their "just bought" or "want to install" head units. FWIW and FYI, nearly every manufacturer has PDF (Adobe) manuals on their website. Pioneer wants a simple subscription (free), JVC is open for anyone and just about every other company including MTX, Sony and Kenwood offers the same. You can not only find installation manuals, but also operator's manuals... which is nice to have when Pioneer wants $8.00 + shipping for a paper manual, so you can understand how to set the clock, adjust the built in EQ, set "best channels", etc. Just so you know, you can get them for free after someone takes your last $120 in trade for the head unit.

---For wire codes relating to the vehicle, 12 Volt Install is a good site, but you will also find a lot of info on the DIY sites... not to mention open service manuals at a local Parts America (Shucks, Kragens, Advance Auto Parts) or any other auto parts store. They usually have one book for each vehicle that is out of the wrapper. Propper edequate is to have clean hands and look for an open manual before you start removing or asking to have wrappers removed. Haynes and Chilton really suck, so I wouldn't purchase one just for stereo wire code. I would spend the extra $1-$20 and get a factory manual.

"wiring diagram" "wire code" "stereo wiring diagram" "stereo wire code" "radio wiring diagram" "radio wire code" "head unit wiring diagram" "head unit wire code"

I am trying to install a new stereo in a '96 explorer. I didnt bother to buy connectors, so i spent a few hours finding wires. Power and acc are easy to find, but the speakers are difficult because there is an amplifier. That amplifier needs to be turned on before my speakers will work. I see many people have had the same problem and I suspect Ford had that great idea to put amplifiers in cars other than just my exploder. The12volt.com does not show the correct wiring diagram (no amplifier). installdr.com does not show the correct wiring diagram either (no amplifier). Im sure I could wire around the amp, but it would be just as easy to incorporate it. If I were to skip it, I would need to find it and jump past, first figuring out the wire codes anyway.
I expect to post a solution within the next few days.

I have 97 Ford Taurus with OEM stereo/tape unit. Suddenly, there is no power to the unit (no display, no sound,no tape). Checked 3 fuses in the fuse box under the dash - all are OK. Is there another in-line fuse? where is it - how to access? Could it be any other problem?

as promised...

bu- blue bk- black gr-green rd-red yw-yellow pu-purple wh-white or-orange pi-pink

My '96 Ford Explorer has a factory amplifier in the passenger side quarterpanel. Its worthless, just like the factory stereo. My advice-- get rid of them both. Your new aftermarket stereo will produce more power than the factory amp could anyway. For all of you first- timers out there, careful with that acc and power wire-- best to connect those first. once you have those and the ground set, plug in your new stereo. That way, you can test your speaker connections as you go. On the back of the factory stereo, there are two plugs, one with 16 pins, one with 6 (room for 8.)

1- bu - amp power-on
2- na
3- bk-gr - ground
4- na
5- bu-rd - Illumination
6- yw-bk - Acc
7- bk - amp ground (not necessary)
8- gn - Power
Not all of the wires are necessary off the 16 pin connector. Actually, you could choose any 8 if you match colors on the input plug at the amp.

2- bu - RR-
3- pu-wh - RR+
4- darkbrownn - RF-
5- wh-rd - FR+
10- yw - RL-
11- bu-bk- RL+
12- wh-or- FL-
13- gn - FL+
Next, remove the amp (3 bolts). The amp is behind all that plastic around the rear passenger window (above the rear wheel). This is the hardest step. You will see when you start trying to make connections. You will make these connections between the 2 plugs from the amp. (were not using it anymore, remember). one plug has 8 pins (output) one has 11 pins (input).

input (14 pin)
1- pu-pi - RR-
2- or-rd - RR+
3- gn-or - FR-
4- wh-gn - FR+
5- tan-gn - RL-
6- gr-bu - RL+
7- bu-wh - FL-
8- gr-bu - FL+
(did you notice pins 1 and 5 changed colors) that may be different on other vehicles. Be sure to test connections before making them permanent.

output (8 pin)
1- pu-wh - RR+
2- wh-rd - FR+
3- bu-bk - RL+
4- gn - FL+
5- bu - RR-
6- gr - FR-
7- yw - RL-
8- wh-or - FL-

I have a 1991 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer with the Premium Sound and am attempting to install a JVC KDS-680 deck. The fool who had it before cut all the wires and put some sort of inline adaptor onto the speaker wires (Poss. for the Factory Amp?). Anyhow, got all the wires hooked up right, stereo powers on but no sound, from radio or CD player. Would this be a proper time to go ahead and yank that POS Factory Amp from the rear? Comments can be sent to vadm.ed@gmail.com Thanks!

The other connector is also 8-pin but it is angled like an L and only has 6 wires coming off it. The part the wires go in is black and the part that plugs into the tape deck is grey.

Can anyone decipher this for me? I haven't been able to find anywhere this configuration of colors.
Thanks!

Help! I am trying to replace my piece of crap factory cd player on my 96 Ford Windstar. The CD player has NEVER worked, it clicks constantly and only plays the 1st 3 or 4 tracks of every cd, that is if it even loads. I decided to replace it, just so I don't have to carry around 60 cds for 3 cds worth of tunes.

I bought 3 different wiring harnesses, and an FAI. From my dash I have the rectangular flat pin cable(hooks up to the wiring harness fine, although I cannot figure out where to stick the orange illumination wire and I am guessing I don't need to hook up the solid blue wire for power antennae if I don't have a power ant.) Power is going to stereo, as I can eject a cd, but no display, no cd spin, etc. I also have a smallish 2 pin cable witha tan and lt blue/pink wire. This is for rear radio control. No biggie, never used this feature. I have 2 speaker grey speaker cables. One is a square 8 pin, the other a square 6 pin. The 8 pin hooks up fine in the wiring harness. The 6 pin I cannot find any harness that it can hook to?! I tired the factory radio without the 6 pin, and it will only function with both 8 and 6 pin speaker cables.

I read on installdr that I needed a Ford Integration Wire harness for premium sound amplifier bypass?! I cannot find one that will accomodate a 6 pin square speaker cable. I just want to be able to listen to a cd all the way through....

Can anyone help? What do I need to do? Do I neeed to keep that darn FAI?! Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Yep, grab a C battery and just start hooking up two wires at a time, one to each end of the battery.

When you hear a speaker make crackly sound when you touch the wires to each end, mark those wires as which speaker they go to, then connect them to the headunit.

I'm surprised, you looked at all of the Ford wiring colors?
