2 or 4 ohms setting??

i have a sony 1200 amp going with 1100 duals.. not great subs but the amp over heats like in 25-30 mins.... i asked circuit city they said either hook up 4 gauge instead of 8 or the amp is hooked for 2 ohms instead of 4 ... how do i know if it is set for 2 or 4??? thanks

I'd need to know the impedence and the voice coil congfiguration on those duals, and exactly how they're wired. I really don't know of any amp that should overheat with a 2 ohm load, 2 ohms is pretty much the normal impedence that most amps run at. Your amp is probably overheating because it's a Sony, sorry to say...
