I had a 6-disc changer in my 1998 Ford Escort that played any burned CD that I put in it. Now I have a 2003 Ford Taurus the 6-disc changer in it won't play ANY burned CD's. Whats up?? Anyone have this problem before??? What can I do about it???

Burned CDs seem to cause CD Errors and eject problems with this in-dash changer.

My 2006 Mustang comes with a Shaker 500 CD changer, and I'm having the same problem. Not only that, but it adds an audible gap between tracks on commercial CDs even in continuous music where other CD players don't add the gap. Just got rid of (Hurricane Wilma got rid of) a 2002 Ford Mustang with 6-CD changer, and had none of these problems.

In addition: The user manual states that the CD changer is designed to play commercially burned discs, and that homemade discs may not play. I have had mixed results so far. One MP3 disc (no folders, just MP3 files, burned via iTunes) seems to play fine. Another with a folder structure (burned via Toast) won't play correctly. Homemade audio CDs play erratically, even though they played fine in 2002 Mustang CD changer. If it's an MP3 player, how can it not play home-burned discs correctly? I'm beginning to be sorry I paid the extra bucks for it...especially since it turns out I can't use an iPod adaptor while the CD changer is using the input. One step ahead...two steps back.

There are a number of reason burned CD-Rs might not play in all players. Some of them are quite technical and not at all obvious. For example, because different brands of CD-R use different chemical formulations to hold the data, each of which has different optical properties, some brands of media won't be compatible with some players. You just have to try out different brands to find what works best for your particular player.

I discuss these and other reasons in Why Can't I Play the CDs That I Burn?, the first in a series of digital music how-to articles I have planned for my website.
