Never connect an amp power line to any wire in the car. The only wire you touch is for switched power to turn the amp off an on. For constant power always go to the battery. Unless he plans on putting something real serious in the car you really dont need 0/1 guage 4 will be fine.

If the amp is truely 1800w rms, then no 4 gauge won't be enough, you'll need 2gauge or lower.
I hope you have HO alternator for it.

Yea anything over 1000W I'd definately do 2 gauge, anything 1500W or more I'd do 0 gauge. 4 gauge is absolutely not big enough. And yea the HO alternator definately helps with that much amperage.
