Can I Splice Replacement Car Antenna ?

My 1994 Nissan Altima power antenna broke and I replaced it with a whip style antenna. The antenna cable connectors from the radio and the replacement antenna do not match so for now I spliced a piece of 12 gauge copper wire between the two cables. FM reception is fine but AM is poor on all stations. I tried a 14 inch rubber antenna first and switched to a 51 inch whip and the reception problem is the same, good FM, poor AM. Can I just cut the connectors and splice the cables directly?

I have a problem with the "hands free" kit I installed in my vehicle. people on the other line state that my reception is "choppy". I spliced the antenna from the old external antenna to the kit antenna. Do I have a problem or is this problem somewhere else?
