I know monster cable makes good ones but I dont have that kinda money. Are the Acoustic Research ones sold at Best Buy any good? I have a crappy Radio Shack one now.

Yes. Chances are you won't hear a difference between the AR and RS ( assuming the RS wire is intact with good shielding and solid connectors).
