What would Christmas be without, The Wizard of Oz a masterful family classic that has grown up with generations of moviegoers over the years with memorable songs like "somewhere over the rainbow" and "follow the yellow brick road" this will scare you and bring down with tears.

So get out the tissues from the moment Dorothy opens the door and the world goes turns from Black & White to Technicolor is probably one of the memorable moments which always gives a lump in the back of the throat.

I don't like to watch this in my regular HT. It was shot in 1.37:1 and I'm not crazy about pillarboxed images. If I go into stretch mode, Dorothy gains 25 pounds. Not good. Also the surround sound is fake.

Oz plays better on my old TVs.

Arr we're talking about the re-mastered version done for the cinemas many years ago and then realised onto DVD, of course it's fake nearly all the sound we hear in motion picture soundtrack is fabricated but in the case of The Wizard of Oz which was done just after the first stereo demonstrations where done back in 1933 I guess movies at that time weren't doing it until Fantasia surrounded the audiences!

But Oz is a good attempt thou even thou some of the sounds you hear in the film when compared with the different language types you can hear it in the sound effects mostly!

Toto I have a feeling where not back in Kansas no more, we must be over the rainbow.

At the present moment I'm running the region 2 DVD version of The Wizard of Oz and one thing that I have conducted was a simple wideband pink noise test. I checked the outputs for all three JBL control 5 for equal SPL db level in A and C weighing.

If you where to play the film with all output levels at 0db where you'll run into masking audio problems with the wide stereo imaging with the (stereo music) so what I simply did was turn the centre channel level down -10db and hay presto (((wow)))!

Surrounds perform averagely but they do surround.

LFE.1 with the twister in chapter 9 is whipping which adds dramatic impact and then finally comes to a halt with stillness and a bewildered Dorothy looking around until she opens the door and the world is transformed into wondrous Technicolor.

I don't like this forest.

It's dark and creepy!

Of course I don't know...

...but it will get darker before it gets lighter.

Do, do you suppose we'll meet any wild animals?

We might.

Animals that eat straw?

Some, but mostly loins and tigers and bears.

-Loins

-And tigers?

And bears!

Loins and tigers and bears! Oh, my!

Loins and tigers and bears!

Oh, my!

Loins and tigers and bears! Oh, my!

Oh, my!

Loins and tigers and bears! Oh, my!

Oh, my!

"LFE.1 with the twister in chapter 9 is whipping which adds dramatic impact and then finally comes to a halt with stillness and a bewildered Dorothy looking around until she opens the door and the world is transformed into wondrous Technicolor."

MGM had originally planned to incorporate a "stencil printing" process when Dorothy runs to open the farmhouse door before the film switches to Technicolor; each frame was to be hand-tinted to keep the inside of the door in sepia tone. This process--cumbersome, expensive, and ineffective--was abandoned in favor of a simpler and more clever alternative (a variation of this process was used, however, in 1939 release prints of The Women (1939)). The inside of the farmhouse was painted sepia, and the Dorothy who opens the door from the inside is not Judy Garland but her stand-in wearing a sepia-rinsed version of the famous gingham dress. Once the door is opened and the camera advances through it, Garland (wearing her bright blue dress) walks through the door and the audience is none the wiser. This effect does not work on older video/TV prints where the Kansas scenes appear in true black and white, as the changeover to color is all too apparent. With the Kansas scenes returned to their original sepia tints, however, they closely match the magical opening door and the effect is powerful.

The first times I saw Oz was on black and white TVs in the early fifties. I had no idea the movie went to color for the dream sequence until years later.
