Car audio power concern

New member Username: ZeddyHamilton, On Canada Post Number: 2 Registered: Mar-06 | if you have power concern with your car audio...simple solution but slight on the pricy side..get a power cap...a car audio place will tell u how big u need...and buy a optima red top batery...there available at wallmart for about 145cdn...and there kick but...i have a kenwood deck pushing 200 wat peak..and 2 visonik 10 subs 1000wats peak total..but the amp pushing them is only 800wats peak...it does just fine without a power cap on a stock alternator...CRANKD...my headlights barely dim...if u can c your dimmmin excivly, eg your lights completly go out, or u can hear your engine rpm slowing down with each bass note, get a cap to support the power drain...then get an alternator...a high end alternator trying to keep up with 2000wats of subs will die fairly quick...so get a cap first then get the alternator...your engine/battery/alternator will thank u for it |

Platinum Member Username: GlasswolfWisteria, Lane USA Post Number: 11285 Registered: Dec-03 | just for the record, all the capacitor really does for you is filter AC ripple and act to reduce propagation delay. If your lights aren't dimming, the alternator is already big enough, or the capacitor is masking the symptoms that it isn't. Hopefully yours is the former and not the latter. The way to tell is to monitor system voltage above idle, and see if it drops below 12 volts an any point. If not, you're fine. If it does, the capacitor is just smoothing out the spikes in demand but the alternator is still being overworked and the amplifiers are clipping. |

New member Username: ZeddyHamilton, On Canada Post Number: 5 Registered: Mar-06 | where was i rong?...hmm?..tell me...so a cap doesnt help with power drain from the battery?...yes it does..it stores power so the amp will draw from there rather then all from the batter/alternator..aka its for smoothing out the drain from the alternator..sorry i didnt add that part...ya it smooths out the spikes from each bass note...and make the alternator not work as hard..or was i rong with my system setup?..i dont think so cuz i KNOW what my amp is pushing..800peak...subs are 1000peak..and i talkd to the guy at EHR he said no cap is fine for me..but if i run the sub at high volume a cap will help..but i rarly have them high enuv...gust a slight rumble in the back ground. or was i rong with the optima battery?...there not the standard liqued cell with plates like a normal car battery..so since thers no plates they can withstand shock better..also they can suppor larger power drains for sustaind periods of time..eg a hard bass hit...if u say im rong..go talk to the guys at ehr..there the ones that told me this...and yes a cap does store electricity..they can cut the power supply to their dysplay boards and still power their headunits and amps...off what?>..the power cap..which is like 20 fared or something |

Now ask yourself this. Where is this power coming from, if it's not coming from your alternator? By having a capacitor, your alternator just has one more thing it has to supply power to. Some people think that it can help a lot during heavy bass notes, when in reality, is a capacitor is completely discharged in under a second or so.. So if you dont have the power to begin with to supply your amplifiers, a capacitor is not going to solve the problem at all. Like I said - it's just another thing drawing electricity, for whatever reason, from your alternator. End of story. |
