Greetings Deborah,

A possible way to solve this issue might be to take an audio out of your TV back to the Receiver with an RCA patch cable. If that is not possible due to no jacks in the back of the TV, or if it does not work, then a cable box is the next best solution (with practically no other options).

Assuming You have the cable going through the VCR (cable in to the VCR and cable out to the TV), you can use the VCR's audio outputs for audio. The VCR's audio must already be hooked up, otherwise you wouldn't be getting surround from the VCR.

What cable are you using to connect the TV to the receiver?

Also, be sure you're seleting the appropriate speaker output through the television's menu screen.
