Muti room or 2 zone receiver and wiring question

I just wired my house to have a whole house speaker system. I ran speaker wire into 4 different rooms from my main room where I am going to have my receiver power all 4 sets of speakers plus a 5.1 surround sound system in the main room. I put volume controls in each room, in series, to control the volume in each of those rooms. My original thoughts were to buy a receiver that was capable of "multi room" or "2 zones." I just realized that I can not run all 4 sets of speakers into one output on the receiver. I have not purchased a receiver yet. Does anyone have any idea of what receiver would be good for this type of application. I want my price range to be somewhere between 300 and 600 dollars. Also... would I need to buy one of those external speaker selectors that would be hooked up to the zone 2 output to run all 4 sets of speakers?
My main concern is really just to listen to the same source throughout the house.

Thanks
Tom
